STILL TUF?

I’ve got to say, as interesting as I’m finding this latest edition of The Ultimate Fighter, with Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen as opposing coaches, I’m completely burned out on this tournament-meets-hijinks format. I mean, it’s served the UFC well. What runs for 17 seasons these days, really?

I can’t imagine the same people watching TUF now were the same who watched the first season, so I guess at least it still performs a function in as much as getting people into the UFC and MMA. But imagine if the program was actually interesting for everyone, not just newbie fans. The ratings, and thereby the advertising benefits, would be massive, surely.

Granted, they gave an overhaul a go with the live fights, which certainly made the series more enjoyable for me, but, still, it’s the same tourney skeleton just with a new haircut. How about a real rethink? Like, 16 fighters but they don’t compete in a grand prix, they get randomly drafted into a ranking with number one fighting number two with the winner staying on to fight number three. And so on until the 16th fighter is up. And take them out of that gym. I think everyone’s bored of looking at it. Move the fighters around to different gyms. Or you could use my idea from before, split the cast in two, have them train at two famous gyms then do the fights at the TUF gym or wherever. Do it live again and you don’t have to worry about spoilers. Well, those are some ideas anyway.

RING RAGE

Unbelievable! Reading the comments on the Georges St Pierre vs. Carlos Condit fight (Big Debate, February 2013), I can only guess some of the Fighters Only readers are only ‘fighters’ in the loosest sense of the word. I’m not a big Georges St Pierre fan, but here is an older guy with lots of ring time side-lined for over a year with a possibly career-ending injury who is fighting for the UFC championship, and he not only rehabs spectacularly and shakes off the ring rust, but also wins the title convincingly. This fight has to be one of the most amazing performances ever. Bravo, GSP! Up next: Diaz.
