We asked four different figures from the MMA universe their opinions on the pressing matters of the moment
The Fighters
1 Has Dan Henderson got the game to take down Jon Jones and impose his will on the champ at UFC 151?
Danny Castillo
“I don’t think his wrestling is able to take down Jon Jones, but his punch is strong enough. And he could possibly use some throws too.”
Damarques Johnson
“Yes. Definitely. ‘Hendo’ definitely has the tools and the skill-set to take down Jon Jones and even put Jones to sleep on his feet.”
Gerald Harris
“Dan’s capable of beating anybody. Other than Chael, he was closest to beating Silva. But Jon Jones surprises everybody.”
Rich Attonito
“He’s got the power in his right hand to knock anybody out. But Jon Jones has way too many weapons and will avoid anything Henderson brings.”
2 Can Sarah Kaufman avoid Ronda Rousey’s armbar and regain the Strikeforce title when they meet in August?
Danny Castillo
“I don’t think so… I don’t think anybody in the UFC could avoid Ronda Rousey’s armbar!”
Damarques Johnson
“I think the only person who can avoid Ronda Rousey’s armbar is Jesus himself.”
Gerald Harris
“I think Ronda Rousey would armbar Jesus. She is amazing. She’s not just athletic, she works really, really hard too.”
Rich Attonito
“Ronda Rousey looks pretty unstoppable right now, so I’d have to say no.”
3 Pat Curran next defends his Bellator title against Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Freire at the end of the summer. Does the winner go into the world top 10 at 145lb?
Danny Castillo
“I believe so. Both those guys are really tough and they’d do well in the UFC.”
Damarques Johnson
“Yes. Pat is already one of the most dangerous top 10 fighters in the world at that weight. So, yeah, definitely.”
Gerald Harris
“No. Pat Curran is one of the most overlooked fighters in the world, but he just doesn’t get the exposure. You gotta beat a ranked guy to get into the top 10.”
Rich Attonito
“They’d have to be in there already to get ranked in the top 10.”
4 Other than fight sports, what Olympic discipline would you like to compete in?
Danny Castillo
“Basketball, definitely.”
Damarques Johnson
“Power lifting would be pretty cool.”
Gerald Harris
“Hockey... ‘cos you can still fight!”
Rich Attonito
“The decathlon, I’d like to do that. Although, I doubt I’d be very good at it.”
5 Do you believe mixed martial arts would benefit from being an Olympic sport?
Danny Castillo
“I don’t think it would be a good Olympic sport. I’m not even sure how they could regulate it.”
Damarques Johnson
“Yes, greatly. Just like a lot of other sports have benefitted from being an Olympic sport. That’s why wrestlers can get college scholarships.”
Gerald Harris
“It would, and it would be amazing. Imagine being in Team USA or Canada... You’d just wanna stay away from Team Brazil!”
Rich Attonito
“Definitely. It would reach out on a new global scale and could only ever be good for the sport.”
