FO talks rides, rhythms and relaxing with MMA’S finest. He may be a hip-hop-loving heavyweight but the TUF 10 alumnus is also an unapologetic Belieber.
CARS
What was your first car and how much did it cost?
“I was fortunate that my first car was actually a Ford F-1 truck which was given to me by my family. The first car I purchased was another truck. After I got in the UFC and beat Chase Gormley I got a nice bonus and bought a brand-new Dodge Challenger. After I beat Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ I bought a BMW M6.”
If you could pimp out your car with any one gadget, what gadget would it be?
“My car is pretty hooked up as it is. I guess I would put off-set rims on it – 22s in the back and 20s in the front.”
MUSIC
What type of music do you listen to most?
“I listen to hip-hop the most. I’m a big Drake fan. Plus, Kanye West, Kid Cudi and guys like that.”
Has your music taste changed over the years?
“I have always been a hip-hop guy. My older brother influenced me and he is a huge, huge hip-hop fan. I will never forget when he got the first Snoop Dogg cassette and I was making fun of him for weeks. With him being into hip-hop, it’s just kind of what I got in to. As I get older, and since moving to Los Angeles, when I miss home I listen to some country music. “
Who do like in country music?
“I like Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw and some old-school stuff.”
Country isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. How easy is it for a newbie to get converted to the cause?
“It takes a while, but once you hear it a few times, it’s like, ‘OK, I can deal with that.’ I was recently at a celebrity golf tournament that Tim Tebow holds for charity, and he brought in three country music singers; when I hear people live I really get in to it.”
If you could walk out to one song for the rest of your career which song would you choose?
“It would be Eminem’s Square Dance or Diddy’s I’m Comin’ Home.”
What song is your guilty pleasure? Is there any Justin Bieber hiding on the iPod?
“Oh yeah! My friend was over and my iPod was on random, and it played three songs in a row by Justin Bieber. It’s newer stuff where he’s with Drake and one with Nicki Minaj; stuff like that. I have five or six Bieber songs and I’m not afraid to admit it.”
Genres are really starting to mix nowadays, right?
“Now they just do good music and make something catchy to sell some downloads on iTunes.”
TV
Which shows are you currently watching?
“The Walking Dead, Dexter; and I’ve been known to flip through some girl stuff.”
Which one would you watch if they were all on at the same time?
“I would say The Walking Dead.”
If you could be on any TV show which one would it be?
“That’s a good question. It would be real dope to be on Friends. I would take over David Schwimmer’s part.”
Which sports do you watch on TV?
“I follow football because I have a lot of pals who compete. I also watch basketball because the Nuggets are good this year; and the Lakers because I’m here in LA. Plus, people might be surprised that I am a big Serena Williams fan. I just saw her compete live and she’s amazing. The other tennis players are so screwed, she’s so good.”
FLICKS
What movie genre are you into most?
“My life is so intense that when I get home from work I just like to chill. I don’t watch anything too intense. I like romantic comedies. If I do go intense it’s anything military. Zero Dark Thirty: I can’t get enough of it. I like horror movies as well.”
If there was a movie made about your life who would you want to play you?
“Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. Anything he touches turns to gold, so I would go with him.”
If you could punch any actor in the face who would you punch and why?
“I’ve never met an actor that has been mean to me. My friend Bryan Callen, who is a comedian and actor, has been in all the Hangover movies, and I’d punch him in the face – just because. I want to punch him in the face as hard as I can. He is awesome though; he’s so damn funny.”
What is the last movie you watched?
“I watched This is 40 on the plane coming home from Florida.”
What was the last film you cried while watching?
“One that hit home was Invincible with Mark Wahlberg. That was the last one that even got close.”
STYLE
How would you describe your style right now?
“I would say it’s pretty good right now! I would put my style up against anyone in the UFC. I’m definitely top three. Sam Stout is a sharp dresser, and so is (Mark) Hominick, but I’m right up there. Those guys are my competition. I wear a lot of suits, ties collared shirts, wing tip shoes, and I like to dress up, man.”
Who is your favorite designer?
“I have been in to Fred Segal lately. I have been in LA and that store is trouble. I have to make sure I leave my wallet in the car.”
You are a man-about-town out there in LA. If you had one go-to outfit, to impress people, what would it be?
“That’s a good question. It would be a sports coat; I like J. Crew. Underneath that I’d wear a nice V-neck or collared shirt, and then I would go with nice jeans; I like Seven jeans. Then I would rock the Cole Haan wingtips. And a nice watch, of course. That’s how I roll. “
Damn, we know Tebow was on the cover of GQ, Maybe you need to be in.
“I know. I need to win a few more fights to be on the cover of that bad boy!”
WALK THIS WAY: SCHAUB'S SQUARE DANCE
If there’s one thing you know you’re going to get from a Brendan Schaub fight it’s that the Aurora, Colorado, native will come out to Square Dance by Eminem.
Released on the hip-hop legend’s fourth studio album, The Eminem Show, Schaub has walked out to the song for the majority of his UFC appearances.
The track, which takes aim at the Bush administration, has become associated with Schaub throughout his short, yet successful career; and even though the so-called ‘Eminem curse’ seemed to affect most fighters, Schaub managed to overcome it, earning four out of six victories after walking out to the Octagon with the track playing in the arena.
