November 2013
Powerful percentages and show-stopping stats from MMA’s past month.
13
No UFC fighter in lightweight history has more knockdowns than Melvin Guillard. He got his 13th (third best in the UFC) only a few seconds prior to knocking out Mac Danzig with ground ‘n’ pound at UFC on Fox 8 in Seattle.
80%
Fans didn’t like Phil Davis getting the judges’ nod over Lyoto Machida at UFC 163 in Brazil. ‘The Dragon’ did stop 80% of takedown attempts from wrestling stud Davis, but was also outhit in total strikes in rounds one (10:12) and two (7:11).
4:47
With the exception of a 49-second injury loss stemming from a Mark Coleman takedown, no one has beaten ‘Shogun’ Rua quicker than Chael Sonnen. At UFC Fight Night 26 in August, Sonnen stopped the former UFC 205lb champion in 4:47 of the first round.
127
Despite being born with no left arm below the elbow, lightweight Nick Newell has reeled off nine first-round finishes since 2009. His 10th win came in July at World Series of Fighting 4, scoring a guillotine choke submission in 127 seconds.
3rd
Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler continued his streak of explosive wins in July by starching David Rickels in 44 seconds. The KO is his third consecutive stoppage since taking the title from Eddie Alvarez in 2011. No other current Bellator champion can claim a similar achievement.
17
Out of competition for over a year, the ring rust showed when Chan Sung Jung challenged for José Aldo’s featherweight belt at UFC 163. In three rounds and two minutes of fighting ‘The Korean Zombie’ landed just 17 significant strikes. That’s merely four more than Chad Mendes managed against Aldo in a fight that lasted just less than a round.
30-25
Fan-favorite and UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon took a beating in the ring and on the scorecards against Michael Johnson in front of his home Boston crowd at UFC Fight Night 26. Two judges scored it 30-27 for Johnson, while the other had it 30-25. It was the first 30-25 in the UFC since Dennis Siver’s decision over Nam Phan at UFC on Fox
5 in December.
