It starts. In the middle of a sparse-looking Octagon, shootfighter Ken Shamrock works for a heel hook on taekwondo fighter Patrick Smith in the very first UFC event 20 years ago. Shamrock would advance to the next round of the trend-setting, history-changing, eight-man tournament by getting the submission only moments later – in turn earning the distinction of being just the second man to secure a then-little-seen tapout, after eventual competition winner Royce Gracie.
