Isolate and dominate with these simple skill games

The imposition of a 10-second limit on sparring drills forces athletes to employ decisive actions, and utilize greater speed in decision-making and explosiveness in physical action.

Running specific scenarios like the following with different training partners will allow the coach and athlete to clearly identify areas where technical knowledge is lacking.

SINGLE-LEG DEFENSE

Pick a head-on-the-outside single-leg. Fighter ‘A’ must work to reverse the takedown, and fighter ‘B’ must complete the takedown.

DOUBLE-LEG DEFENSE

Fighter ‘A’ starts in on a double-leg. Fighter ‘B’ must sprawl on, crossface or pancake fighter ‘A’ within the 10-second limit.

SIDE CONTROL ESCAPES NEXT TO THE WALL

Fighter ‘A’ begins beneath a cross-body and must reverse or stand and separate. Fighter ‘B’ must maintain the pin, mount or take the back in response to ‘A’s attempts.

REFEREE POSITION

Fighter ‘A’ must free himself from the bodylock and reverse or separate, hip heist, attack for a kimura, turn to sitting guard or sweep. Fighter ‘B’ must keep his man down and land some ground ‘n’ pound.

MOUNT ESCAPE

Fighter ‘A’ begins under the mount. Fighter ‘A’ must knee-and-elbow escape, bridge, hip heist or hip-press out from under. Fighter ‘B’ must maintain position and land ground ‘n’ pound or attack for the armlock.
