From overstretched heels, tight-fitting dresses and a wardrobe full of jackets and boots – welcome to the world of Strikeforce’s new bantamweight champion
Do you dress up a lot or are you a more casual kind of girl?
“I’m definitely much more casual. A lot of the stuff I buy is for $10 or $20. Every once in a while I’ll see a jacket I can’t live without or something, but most things I buy, as long as they look good, that’s what matters. I really like to be different. I shop at a lot of weird and obscure stores. I really like things that are unique.”
What is your weakness? What do you spend money on more than anything else?
“It’s definitely jackets and boots. No matter how ugly you feel or how fat you feel you always look good in a good jacket and a good pair of boots!”
What kind of jeans do you like to wear?
“I’m actually sponsored by Citizens of Humanity, which is a really high-end denim company, so I always get really good-quality jeans. I have a copious amount of good denim which is given to me so I wear them all the time.”
Do you have a specific brand of shoes, or boots, that you like?
“No, not really. If I see something that I like then I’ll stop. A cute boot is a cute boot, I don’t care who made it.”
So tell us about this jacket collection, is that dominated by one brand?
“No, I just like anything that’s different. Like I have this one jacket that I got from a school in Japan that has all these great logos on it. And I have a bunch of other jackets from all over the world that I’ve picked up on my travels. Anything different. I’ve got big Harley leather jackets and ones with ears on the hood, anything unique I love.”
So what about evening wear? Let’s say you were going on a date, would you dress up then?
“If it was a date and I was going somewhere nice then I have some long-sleeve but very tight dresses that I wear. I feel like because I’m covering up the skin on my arms that I can go shorter with the skirt. That way you can balance out exactly how much skin is showing… I guess my rule is if I cover up the arms then I can show more ass! I have very broad shoulders and I’m bigger on the hips, but then I have a tiny waist so the only dresses I wear are tight and form-fitting, because if they hang down I just look like a huge fridge!”
What about heels?
“The thing is, I’ve broken my toes so many times that it’s really hard to find heels that feel right. Sometimes I’ll put them on and I’ll have one toe that’s like, ‘No, I’m going in this direction.’ So I actually had to get a professional shoe stretcher to stretch all my heels out. Like any girl, I love to wear them and from training boxing and judo I’m used to being on my toes all of the time. I do like wearing heels when I can, though.”
I guess being a full-time fighter it’s also difficult to find time to wear heels during the day?
“Exactly. Most girls will get up in the morning, put their make-up on once, put their nice clothes on once and then that carries over until the night time. Whereas if I wanna look good for the whole day I gotta hit the reset button three times a day.”
Do you have any luxury items? Have you treated yourself yet?
“No, I still drive around in my ’05 Honda Accord that I got with my Olympic money – and that didn’t even cover the whole car! It’s gold and I named it Fonda, Ronda’s Honda Fonda… But I’m really saving up for a nice house in Venice.”
Living in California you must have some nice sunglasses though, right?
“Well, after a recent fight my manager said he wanted to treat me and buy me a special gift, so he got me these really bad-ass Porsche Aviator glasses – and I lost them in just a month. I lose everything. I got upset as I tried so hard to look after those poor glasses. I got mad at myself for getting attached to them. So I never spend on things like that, it’s just not worth it. So cheap glasses and cheap stuff, that’s me. I’m a cheap date!”
