He made his name in Japan, but Strikeforce’s ‘King Mo’ throws down with the real sounds of the South

What is your favorite type of music?

“Man, I listen to any kind of rap out of the South. As long as it’s got a good beat, stuff that gets me motivated, to go after my goals and achieve them.”

Do you ever listen to old school stuff, like R&B or Motown, or is it always rap for you?

“No, I like R&B, but when it comes to training I’ve got to keep my mind moving and motivated. I can’t be listening to no Mary J Blige or s**t. I may bust it out to some James Brown, but when I’m training it’s hard. I have music when I’m training.”

Okay, so name three artists you regularly listen to while you train?

“I can name more than three; Nu$$ie, B King, Money Montana, Fat Pimp, Zero, Mercy (RIP), C-Lok, Del’ The Krazyman; I could go all day. I’m more into the local scene, you know. These guys may not be international stars, but they’re big in the South. I listen to these guys from the local scene because I get what they’re rapping about.”

What is your least favorite type of music?

“Techno man. The black man’s kryptonite.”

What do you think about rock music?

“I don’t think nothing about rock ‘n’ roll or country music, none of that. Techno. I don’t get none of that. I’m just all about R&B and rap and that’s about it.”

Do you have a signature walkout?

“I like to switch it up. I’ve been coming out

to my man Money Montana, he’s an up-and-coming Dallas star, and I’m gonna go with Fat Pimp next time. But I wanna go with some James Brown at some point. I just wanna represent Texas.”

So it’s all about supporting the local guys for you?

“For sure. My boy Record Mike did a song called Chase the Flow with Charlie Boy, who’s nationwide now. I like to support these guys. The MMA crowd don’t hear the stuff I listen too. I know rap is big but you don’t get white folk listening to the type of rap I listen too. This stuff only gets played in the clubs of the black neighborhoods in the South. It’s not mainstream at all, it’s all pretty grimy.”

How do you listen to your music?

“I got three iPods. One has 10,000 songs on there, it’s the old, old one with the little disc thing and it’s real thick. It’s like at 32 megabites or something.”

SHUFFLE

HIT SHUFFLE AND NAME THE FIRST FIVE SONGS THAT COME UP. NO CHEATING

Mouse feat. Lil Boosie and Lil Trill - Rubbing In My Head

“This is definitely a song to train to but you gotta go hard. This is from the Baton Rouge Mark II mix tape. This is definitely my jam.”

T-Wayne feat. Beatking - Beat Beat Beat

“This is from the The Most Known Unknown mix tape, volume one. This is how they do it down in the triple D – that’s the dirty, dirty Dallas, Texas. This is another good training track. It’s real grimy.”

Fat Pimp - Trap Nigga

“This is off the Bad As I Wanna Be mix tape, vo0umel two. This is on there ‘cos it’s a great track. He’s got his own style and he’s remixed this track to make it his own. This track fires me up.”

Kevin Gates - No Hook

“This is off the Kevin Gates for President mix tape. This guy goes hard. He just got out of jail a few months ago and is getting back on track but he is one of the most underrated rappers in the game right now. I’ve been into this guy for about two years.”

Kevin Gates - Bend Em Backwards

“Off a mix tape named The Leak. This is another motivation song. It’s not really for the club, but it’s to get your mind right. It gets me motivated.”
