Pete Irving is a professional welterweight fighter and Fighters Only’s resident fight expert. Applicable in more situations than you realize, turn the tables on a swathe of shocked foes with these judo parry throws.

BODY DROP (TAI OTOSHI)

Although the type of headlock necessary for these counters is often an error that leads to the aggressor giving the back, these judo techniques can be effective in countering superior tie-ups, when the opponent establishes a bodylock from the over-under or from double underhooks. Helping you get the upper hand even in disadvantageous situations.

Pete has inside control and his head on the same side as his underhook, a favorable position in the clinch.

2 Pete tries to secure a bodylock. Emma steps across his body, blocking his foot with her own.

3 Emma brings Pete’s posture down with the headlock.

As Emma twists, Pete is thrown over and lands on his back.

5 Emma lands on Pete, ribs to ribs, and pins with kesa gatame.

BASIC HIP TOSS FROM UNDERHOOK (O GOSHI)

1 Emma has double underhooks on Pete.

2 Pete starts to back step.

3 Pete leans and twists his hips out, loading Emma’s weight onto his hips.

SWEEPING HIP THROW, AS A COUNTER TO DOUBLE UNDERHOOKS (HARAI GOSHI)

1 Emma has achieved double underhooks on Pete.

2 Pete starts to rotate, reaching around Emma’s head and pulling down with his overhook to break her balance.

3 Pete drives his grip over to Emma’s armpit, rather than round the neck and back-steps completely.

4 Pete gets his hip under Emma’s level, loading her weight onto himself. He positions his leg to prevent her simply stepping around and being able to employ the bodylock.

5 Pete leans forward taking Emma off the mat.

6 Pete kicks back, spinning Emma in mid-air.

7 Pete has top position.

SPRING WRAP-AROUND THROW, COUNTER TO REAR BODYLOCK (HANE MAKIKOMI)

4 As Emma twists, Pete flies through the air and prepares to break-fall.

5 Emma lands in top position.
