October 2012

A fighter of great contradiction, the ‘Korean Zombie’s ground game is tight whilst his stand-up is wild. Here’s how to fight like the red-hot UFC featherweight contender

TWISTER

Chan Sung Jung has the distinction of executing the first twister submission in UFC history.

IN THE GYM

The twister is usually set up from side control or from the back. Switch from back control with both hooks to a leg triangle or lockdown. Capturing the arm is the key to taking the grip around the neck. Back order a copy of Fighters Only February issue for a more in-depth look at the twister submission.

In Action

Jung set up his twister against Leonard Garcia from the back, switching from having both hooks in to triangling the legs. Garcia made a mistake by reaching out rather than keeping his arms tight, allowing the 'Korean Zombie' to grip around the head.

TAKING THE BACK

The Korean Zombie's style on his feet is characterized by his wild lurching movements. The unpredictability of his unorthodox footwork sometimes sees him eating large amounts of punishment, but occasionally pulls off a maneuver of spectacular flair.

IN THE GYM

Use an arm drag to cut the angle on your training partner, then jump to take the back. Start slowly and execute the jump with as few movements as possible. Speed will best be achieved by efficiency.

In Action

Check out his amazing back take leading to a fast rear naked choke at Sengoku 7 against Shintaro Ishiwatari in '09. He set up the jumping back grab with a crazy flurry that saw his Japanese opponent dazed and struggling to keep pace.

SWITCH HITTING

Fighting from both stances, and sometimes no stance at all, Chan Sung Jung holds nothing back and swings for the fences.

IN THE GYM

Get your pad man to move back whilst showing hooks. Move through your stance, landing your punch at the same time as you step. Start slowly and build up the tempo until you can charge like Chan Sung Jung. Be warned, while you step through and become square you have temporarily sacrificed your defense: this approach banks on having a chin like the Korean Zombie!

In Action

The Korean Zombie's first fight against Leonard Garcia at WEC 48 went down in history as the craziest brawl in WEC history. Both men abandoned all defense in favor of wild aggression. Chan Sung Jung habitually switches stance, walking through with his hook punches.
