LET’S GET IT ON

Having just read ‘Big’ John McCarthy’s autobiography (Let’s Get It On), and learning about all the inside workings and behind the scenes of various UFC events it’s got me excited about all the other books that might come out in the future. We’ve already had Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Matt Hughes and BJ Penn, but imagine the things we could learn about the feud between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans if one of them ever wrote a book. Or better yet if the trainer between them, Greg Jackson, ever penned a biography. The things that guy has been privy to in the gym, at events, on the grapevine, must be insane. Better yet, what if Dana White dropped an autobiography? The kingpin of them all letting loose and spilling the beans on what all the fighters are really like behind the scenes. I’m already salivating.

JUDGE AND JURY

So I was reading the last issue and spotted a letter from Pete Ericksson commenting on your judging feature from a while back, and asking what people’s thoughts were on changes to the 10-point-must system. As far as I’m concerned we have the solutions already in other sports. MMA already uses the 10-point system which came from boxing, so, realistically, why don’t we just have that only apply to the stand-up portion of an MMA fight? When they take it to the ground let’s use the protocols of sport jiu-jitsu, where points are awarded for gaining positional advantages and takedowns. Granted those don’t cover the clinch but seeing as that position is most often intended to result in a takedown or to apply damage then the other two systems come into play by proxy.

You can still keep the three judges because one can follow the boxing portion, another the grappling and then a third scoring the rounds overall. Plus you can keep the 10-point structure as you could just get the grappling judge to use the jiu-jitsu scores as the basis for a 10-point verdict each round. This way you can’t say judges scored a bout incorrectly because they didn’t understand the ground game or vice versa. It’s a crazy idea, but it might work. What do your readers think?
