European techno mixed with American rockabilly? The 30-year-old TUF 7 winner’s iPod is as unpredictable as he is unassuming
What kind of iPod do you have?
“I have an iPhone 4, and I also have an iPod Nano which I use when I can, but this is a good back-up. I don’t always want to take the iPhone in the gym sometimes. My Nano is orange out of preference; it’s easy to find in an emergency. If I’m ever in some sort of wilderness-survival situation and I want to listen to Phil Collins I don’t want to be fumbling around in my backpack looking for my Nano.”
Are you a music fan?
“I don’t know if it’s bad but I don’t know a lot about music. I wouldn’t say I’m musically oriented. I know what I like but I’m not so into music. I like songs on an individual basis. I’ve never been so flatly into one genre or one artist, it’s always been more individual for me.”
Do you train to music?
“I like electronic stuff, anything with a fast tempo. European techno stuff, I have a lot of that just for training. I can definitely listen to it recreationally but if I’m not actively training and don’t need energy I listen to a wider variety of things.”
Do you have particular walkout music you like to use?
“Over 50% of the time I’ve fought, Dana has said no to my walkout song so I always have to choose something else. Sometimes I’ll use Tiger Army songs or a European techno song. I don’t put a lot of stock into a walkout song.”
Do you listen to music before you go out to fight?
“No. I’ve thought about that, I’ve never done it though. Right before a fight I’m just kind of concentrating on what it is.”

Girl Talk - Get It, Get It
“You can download their album for free and instead of paying for it you can just donate what you think it’s worth. They do mash-ups with like an MOP beat on top of a Guns ‘n’ Roses vocal. They have individual songs but they’re made to be listened to in one continuous mash-up.”
ABBA - Dancing Queen
“Me and my brothers we like to have a good time between fights. What we like to do is go to karaoke bars. One time this song came around and I’m not going to lie, we tore this song down, we wrecked it. So I listen to it when I want to remember that night.”
Boston - More Than a Feeling
“I don’t think I have to justify that. There’s definitely an element of nostalgia there but it’s just a good song.”
Tiger Army - Wander Alone
“Tiger Army is another band that I kind of like. There’s not a lot of bands where I can listen to an entire album but they’re one; I tend to like most of their songs. I’ve used them for walkouts a couple of times with Enter the Darkness.”
Guns ‘n’ Roses - Sweet Child of Mine
“That is because of all of the Guitar Hero I’ve played. I was never a fan of the song until I played Guitar Hero. That game made me end up liking half the songs I didn’t like before just because you’re playing them so much and you kind of get into them. I’m a fan of certain songs of theirs. But I’m not screaming in the front row for Axl at their concerts – anymore.”
