UFC on ESPN 66 took place in Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday night, and fans at T-Mobile Center were treated to a host of exciting finishes.
In the mian event, Ian Machado Garry outpointed Carlos Prates over five rounds to emerge victorious, but the Irish welterweight didn't have it all his own way. Garry began brightly and largely negated the threat of his Brazilian opponent over the opening three rounds.
"The Nightmare" grew in stature as the fight progressed however, and looked to be close to finihsing the fight down the home stretch in the final round. Garry ultimately survived to hand Prates the first defeat of his UFC career.
In the co-main event, Chinese behemoth Mingyang Zhang picked up the nineteenth first-round finish of his professional career as he stopped Anthony Smith, who subsequently retired.
Bonus Winners
- Randy Brown and Nicolas Dalby each earned an additional $50,000 for their epic battle, which ended with Dalby face down on the canvas early in round two.
- The aforementioned Mingyang Zhang picked up a $50,000 bonus for his finish of Anthony Smith.
- UFC debutant Malcolm Wellmaker also collected a $50,000 bonus forhis spectacular check-hook KO of Cameron Saaiman on the prelims.
