FO: So what kind of music do you listen to at home?

Joey: “I’m a huge music fan. I grew up in the ‘80s so I kind of have a weird taste in music because of that. I love old school R ‘n’ B and hip hop and I love European techno.”

What kind of music do you listen to when training?

“It’s funny because we’re doing a new rule at Alliance MMA where if it’s your fight camp then the last two weeks before you take-off you get to pick the music. For my last fight camp I got to pick and everyone was p*ssed and bitchin’ because I was just playing house music all the time. Everyone was like, ‘These songs don’t even have words,’ and I was just saying, ‘Shut up, it’s the best!’ [laughs].”

Do you listen to different music to suit what mood you’re in?

“If I’m lifting heavy I like to listen heavy like Metallica or Black Sabbath. If I’m chillin’ in the car then I’m a big fan of Elton John and old stuff like Michael McDonald.”

Do you like to change your walkout music?

“I was walking out to Still DRE from Chronic 2001. I found this song from the Breakin’ 2: The Electric Boogaloo film soundtrack called Din Daa Daa by George Kranz. It was this awesome breakdancing film from the ‘80s. It’s definitely got the energy levels so I think I’ll rock that for a couple more fights. I remember walking out at UFC: Fight for the Troops 2 and they were going crazy for it.”

Do you think the UFC should add exit music?

“Yeah in the smaller shows, if you win they play the song you walk out to. Why not in the UFC?”

Do you listen to music on your iPhone?

“Well I actually have a Droid mp3 player which has a cool app that gives me free mp3 downloads which is amazing.”

Do you make your own playlists?

“For my last fight camp I just typed into my phone app ‘Swedish House Mafia Live Mixes’ and it got me a bunch of live mixes from their actual performances so it was like being there at the actual rave. That’s what I rocked: Swedish House Mafia, Paul Oakenfold, Dirty South and DJ Tiesto.”

THE SHUFFLE CHALLENGE

Hit shuffle on your iPod and name the first five songs that come up.

No cheating

1. The Beatles – Eleanor Rigby

“This is a song I’d definitely chill to in the car plotting my next move [laughs].”

2. Fiona Apple – Criminal

“This song reminds me of high school. I like to sit back and reminisce. I had a little crush on her because I thought she was sexy but weird – like she might stab you after you went on a date if she thought you’d messed with her.”

3. Tupac and Snoop Dogg – 2 of Amerikaz

Most Wanted

“It’s just an absolute classic. A West Coast hip hop song that you can’t go wrong with. That can go with training, chillin’, with anything. It’s an ‘any time of the day’-type song.”

4. DJ Tiesto – Adagio for Strings

“A pre-fight song. I listen to it before every fight to get me riled-up.”

5. Kanye West feat. Rihanna – All of the Lights

“That’s one that definitely gets played a lot at Alliance. I call that an Alliance feature song.”
