Issue 077

July 2011

This is YOUR page to tell us what you think of all things Fighters Only and MMA. Get your feelings off your chest and in their place there could be an FO ‘Flying Knee’ T-shirt! Plus, send us your pictures of you with fighters – and if you can slip a copy of FO into the pic, that’s even more likely to find its way into print.

Heavy lies the crown

I agree entirely with Gareth Davies in issue 27 article, ‘Fedor Myth Crushed By Evolving MMA Juggernaut.’ He mentions Fedor Emelianenko could be better suited to light heavyweight. I’ve been screaming for a cruiserweight division for the last few years. As MMA evolves, it needs more weight divisions, more champions, more household names. There are some natural cruiserweights (205–230lb) who would bring some outstanding world-title fights, but who would otherwise never win the heavyweight belt because of a size disadvantage.

Square eyes

After recently hitting the big ‘3-0’ and being showered with gifts varying from camouflage underwear to ‘80s-movie-themed pajamas, I decided to purchase some old UFC DVDs with some newly acquired giftcards. Usually I watch the pay-per-views live round at one of the guys’ houses; we go round, drink a few beverages, play computer games until the fun begins and we can finally cheer on our favorite fighters. However, by not fully concentrating on the fights and analyzing the fighters’ moves and strategies I never realized how much I had been missing.

After purchasing those old UFC DVDs, I was able to sit down and truly scrutinize (and truly enjoy) the world of MMA in all its geeky glory. I always thought Rashad Evans was a bit of a show off, but after re-watching UFC 88 I’ve totally changed my view – what a knockout against ‘The Iceman.’ The same can be said for Matt Serra, a bit arrogant and brash, but his MMA story before UFC 69 and his in-ring strategy and power against GSP was a wonder to behold. The leg kicks of Forrest Griffin against ‘Rampage’ at UFC 86, Matt Hughes’ rear naked choke on Frank Trigg at UFC 52 and Martin Kampmann’s arm triangle choke at UFC 68 are just a few of the amazing highlights I can now share with my fellow MMA freaks.

I encourage everyone to look for these priceless DVD gems. By studying each fight’s technical beauty (and by reading Fighters Only cover to cover) you too can become a legendary MMA guru/geek.
