Heavy-handed Shane Carwin first exploded onto the UFC scene in May of 2008 with a 44-second KO over the tough Christian Wellisch. Since then he’s carved a path through the division, winning three more times in a total of only five minutes 48 seconds, stopping tough opponents such as Frank Mir and Gabriel Gonzaga.

A part-time engineer, Carwin is a former wrestler but has proved to be one of the most powerful and dangerous strikers in the game today. His meaty XXL-sized fists have earned him a total of seven victories by KO or TKO, and his fast track through the division has seen him ultimately claim the interim UFC heavyweight championship title.

With his powerful physique, gigantic fists and ferocious punching power, many people see Carwin as the only fighter who stands a chance of taking out current heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. They are expected to meet in an epic clash of huge men on UFC 116 in July, where they will compete for the undisputed heavyweight title.

Power

A massive heavyweight who has to cut over 20lb to make the 265lb upper limit of the UFC heavyweight division, Carwin is a mammoth of a man with strength to match. He has so far managed to overpower every single one of his opponents, with not one of them making it out of the first round.

Right hand

Carwin’s not-so-secret weapon is his hellishly powerful right hand. Backed up by former heavyweight title challenger Gabriel Gonzaga, he put him to sleep by barely brushing the Brazilian’s chin with his fist. Frank Mir found out that Carwin’s right hand is equally dangerous at short range – the uppercuts Carwin landed in their fight put Mir in serious trouble, allowing Carwin to finish the jiu-jitsu expert off with ground ‘n pound.

Training partners

One factor that is often overlooked is that Carwin trains with some of the sport’s top fighters. He works closely with the likes of Nate Marquardt while in Denver, Colorado, but also trains at the world-famous Jackson’s Submission Fighting in New Mexico, home to the training camps of fighters such as Georges St Pierre, Rashad Evans, and more.
