Refs don’t pick and choose fights

UFC referee Josh Rosenthal has said that refs don’t get to choose the fights they are assigned to officiate, no matter how much they’d prefer to watch them as a fan. “There are fights sometimes I would like to just watch,” he says. “When you are in there it is hard to enjoy the fight sometimes, we’re so focused on what we’re doing.”

Did you celebrate Miguel Angel Torres Day?

Former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Angel Torres was given the key to the city of East Chicago, Indiana, and honored by city officials for his dedication to bettering the community in June. In case you missed it, June 4 was declared ‘Miguel Angel Torres Day’.

Kos and GSP both want better drug testing

Josh Koscheck is never one to mince his words, but the American Kickboxing Academy fighter was careful not to point any fingers at GSP, his rival coach on series 12 of The Ultimate Fighter, regarding the steroid accusations some have made against the welterweight champion. Both he and St Pierre have welcomed blood testing for performance-enhancing drugs ahead of their fight. “I would love to do it; why not?” Koscheck asked. “I think Olympic-style testing would be great for our sport.” St Pierre said he believes the entire sport should embrace the process. “I have no problem; any time he wants. I know a lot of people cheat in this sport, and it’s unacceptable. I’m for random drug testing. There’s nobody in the UFC that agrees more with random testing then me. Anything they want, I don’t care – I give my body to science.”

Toney training with King Mo

Boxing legend James ‘Lights Out’ Toney has been training with Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammad ‘King Mo’ Lawal for the former boxer’s upcoming fight with Randy Couture. This marks the second time Lawal will help a fighter prepare to face off with Couture – he also helped Antonio ‘Minotauro’ Nogueira prepare for his UFC 102 bout with the UFC Hall of Famer.
