The number-one contender for the Strikeforce 135lb women’s belt, Miesha Tate takes no prisoners. But, if she did, blasting Mariah Carey-Linkin Park mash-ups might be great interrogation tactics
FO: When do you listen to music most often?
Miesha: “Definitely when I’m running. Not so much when I’m training or sparring, obviously, but when I’m running I like to listen to music because it’s very monotonous so the music helps kind of bring a rhythm to it, and usually helps motivate me to run a little bit harder.”
What’s your favorite type of music?
“My favorite type of music? I like a lot of types. I think probably rock. I like a little bit more of an older rock, and I like some R&B as well.”
Do you have a favorite artist?
“I really enjoy Linkin Park a lot. Fuel have some really good songs. Mariah Carey’s extremely talented. I like dance music too; you go out to the club and they kind of have that techno. I love that it always makes me want to dance.”
Do you have a signature song, or a specific style of music you like to walk out to?
“I used to walk out to Linkin Park. What’s so funny is I’ll think about my walkout music around a month out from my fight and I’m like, ‘I’ve got to pick a song. I’ve got to pick a song.’ And pretty soon I’m at the fight venue and I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, I never picked anything. What am I going to do?’ I always tell the guy, ‘Just pick something from Linkin Park, I don’t care what it is,’ because I like their music pretty much overall. But now I have a group out of Washington, they’re called Palace Revolt and they wrote a song and it’s called Feeling Me. It has kind of that rock-group feel to it and it’s a really good song. It has a quote like, ‘Are you feeling me?’ and it just really gets you pumped up.”
Do you listen to different kinds of music when you’re just cruising and driving in the car?
“Yeah, usually when I’m just driving in the car I like more R&B, some rap and things like that. More like something you might hear in a club, or things that make you just want to dance and have fun. A little more laid-back.”
Do you have a favorite song?
“I really love Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. That’s one of my favorites just because it’s a very passionate song but it’s not super ‘lovey dovey’ or romantic, it’s just kind of in the middle. It’s a very interesting song.”
THE SHUFFLE CHALLENGE
Hit shuffle on your iPod and name the first five songs that come up.
No cheating
1. Fuel – Bad Day
“That’s in there because I just really like that song. When I picture myself listening to it the most is maybe when I have to clean my room [laughs].”
2. Matchbox 20 – Bent
“I really like that one. I probably wouldn’t run to that song. It would be more for when you’re driving around in the car.”
3. Linkin Park – Breaking The Habit
“That would be definitely a song I’d find myself running to. I’ll pick that song specifically if I need to be motivated because it’s really encouraging. It’s saying: if you’re doing anything wrong or whatever, basically you’re breaking the habit, you’re setting new standards, breaking new boundaries. That’s what it feels like to me when I play that song.”
4. Nickelback – Saving Me
“It’s one of their newer songs. That’s one of those songs I’d listen to in the car. It’s not something I’d train to or anything like that.”
5. Madonna – Hung Up
“That’s a really good song. She’s a great artist too. Again I think that would be a song where I’d be on my way to the gym for morning practice; I just want to get in there and get practice going.”
