From euro-dance to Hannah Montana… UFC heavyweight Pat Barry has a unique taste in music that belies his Van Damme-esque, kumite fight approach.
Pat (5-2-0) spoke to FO a short time after his memorable fight with Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ and clued us up on his unusual listening habits.
FO: What kind of music do you listen to at home?
Pat: “I listen to music all the time because I hardly ever watch TV. So every day I wake up, I hit play on my computer and whatever comes up I’ll listen to. And it really can go from anything. It can go from Yani, to The Little Mermaid soundtrack, to something that’s all instrumental like DJ Tiesto techno. It doesn’t matter.”
What kind of music do you prefer?
“I listen to pretty much anything. I’m not a really big country fan or that really dark metal, like ‘Die, Jesus.’ Not really my kind of thing, but I like everything possible.”
Do you like to listen to music when you train?
“I can do. I guess whatever really gives me a good feeling, whatever gives me ‘the tingles’ when I hear it. I can go anywhere from DMX to listening to Africa from Toto.”
We did this with Ray Sefo not too long ago and of course Backstreet Boys popped up on Ray’s iPod, so he will never ever live that down, ever. Big tough Samoan; little girl music. Do you have any Backstreet Boys on your iPod?
“I don’t have any Backstreet Boys on my iPod but I do have one or two Hannah Montana songs.”
Who’s your favorite artist?
“As of right now, Calvin Harris. He’s a pretty underground type of guy, Calvin Harris, but he’s pretty good. I just recently got into Toto. My Antoni Hardonk fight I heard Africa for the first time and I’ve really been listening to that and Rosanna every day at least ten times a day.”
What do you use for an iPod?
“I use my iPhone. I’ve had it probably about two years now.”
Are you thinking about getting the G4?
“Yes. I have to. Probably today, I have to. I touched it, I held somebody’s in my hand and went, ‘Oh my God, I need this.’ There’s nothing wrong with mine but I’m going to upgrade anyway. Apple, they’re taking over the world. It’s like SkyNet [from the Terminator film series].”
THE SHUFFLE CHALLENGE
Hit shuffle on your iPod and name the first five songs that come up. No cheating
1. Daft Punk – Face to Face
“This is what Cheick Kongo walked out to when he fought Frank Mir, and I was jumping up and down. I’d never heard it before, ever.”
2. Black Eyed Peas – Meet Me Halfway
“Personally I’m a fanatic when it comes to instrumentals. If anything can sound good instrumentally then I like it, no matter what. This is a relaxed, chill song.”
3. BG – My Hood
“I’m from New Orleans, he’s talking about New Orleans, so I will support and represent anything ‘504 NO’ every day.”
4. Toto – Africa
“The Tuesday before the fight with Antoni Hardonk I heard it getting in the elevator when we got to the hotel. I Shazam’ed it and I went upstairs and I put in on repeat the entire week and I’ve listened to the song at least once a day every day since.”
5. Kings of Convenience – I’d Rather Dance With You
“If you’ve never seen this video you’ve got to look it up. This dude is the nerdiest dude in the world and this song is just all round great. If this were an instrumental I would play this all the time. I would walk out to it.”
