Ken Shamrock challenges old-school fighters
Mixed martial arts forebear, Ken Shamrock, says that despite having his best years behind him he still wants to lock horns with other fighters from the sport’s heyday, including his brother Frank. “I’ve got guys out there like the Tank Abbotts, Dan Severns, guys that I’ve lost to that I shouldn’t have lost to, that I’d like to do just for myself, not for TV ratings, not for anything other than myself just to put that under my belt,” says Shamrock, once known as ‘The World’s Most Dangerous Man’. He added he would like to square off with the fighters from his time that he never got a chance to battle and mentioned names such as Mark Coleman and Pedro Rizzo.
A fight with Frank Shamrock is still very much of interest to Ken. “[Frank] was very disrespectful to my father who took care of him his whole life and gave him an opportunity at life. I’d love to get my brother in the ring and beat the stuffing out of him, then hug him after it’s over and say, ‘You know what? This is how you respect people.’”
No super heavyweight division for UFC says White
A lack of quality super heavyweights is keeping the UFC from creating a 265lb+ division according to Dana White. “We’re just getting to the point now where the heavyweight division is probably the best it’s ever been in UFC history and more and more guys keep popping up,” stated White. “You’re not going to go out and find too many super heavyweights out there. There just aren’t enough big guys like that.”
UFC will return to Germany despite TV ban
Germany will host another UFC event according to the company’s president, Dana White. Since staging UFC 99 in Cologne during June of last year, German authorities have prevented UFC programming from being televised due to the “unacceptable” extent of violence shown. Despite the setbacks White remains adamant the UFC will revisit Germany saying that not having TV won’t stop the company. “One thing we don’t do, we don’t back down, and we don’t curl up and climb into the closet when things don’t go [our way]. We’re going to come out, guns blazing and we’re going to keep going.”
Mir considering light heavyweight drop
Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir says that he’s contemplating making a move down to the 205lb weight class. The revelation comes during a break period for the Las Vegas native. Mir says: “I’ve just been watching what I eat and see how my body, without trying to put size on, what my natural weight will fall at now since I have lifted a lot lately to add size. Sometimes I stand next to Forrest [Griffin] and I think I’m in the wrong weight class.” He has previously stated that he would like to fight Anderson Silva – a drop to the light heavyweight division would make
that a possibility.
‘JZ’ joins Strikeforce
American Top Team fighter Gesias ‘JZ’ Cavalcante (14-3-1) has signed with Strikeforce. The lightweight, once considered one of the best at his weight in the world, hasn’t fought since May 2009 and has struggled with persistent knee injuries. The Brazilian made his name fighting in the now-defunct K-1 HERO’s and won their 2007 Grand Prix.
