Though this former WEC and UFC middleweight spends half his time in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Osterneck’s Hawaiian heritage seeps all the way through his kitbag.

Dakine kitbag

Nissen: “I’ve got what I call the ‘world traveler’ Dakine bag. It’s been with me all over the world and I can fit all my stuff in it: from my gym stuff to my nice clothes. It’s really an all-in-one bag you can take all over the world with you.”

Cageside boxing gloves

“I haven’t put on any MMA gloves in a while because my hand’s still healing [from a break]. I’ve got the 18oz Cageside heavy bag gloves that offer the most protection for my hand at the moment.”

Cageside shin guards

“I like them; they’re light. My sparring partners don’t like them because they think they’re too small and I kick kind of hard, but I like them. They go on fast and easy and they stay on pretty good for a Velcro set.”

Mouthpiece

“This mouthpiece has got mold all over it. It’s my old keepsake that I’ve had for a long time. It was my first molded mouth guard. It’s a Gladiator guard. It fits so perfectly and I’ve never had a problem with it so I’ve never had a reason to change.”

Heart rate monitor

“Nicky Hind is my coach when it comes to scheduling my workouts and she gets pissed off at me if I don’t wear my heart rate monitor. She says it’s a waste of time if you don’t wear it. I’ve used it in the last few training camps. I find it’s helpful to gauge my progress and my recovery time and everything else in between.”

Oakley sunglasses

“The sunglasses are actually given to me by a friend. They’re Oakley. I call them the Terminators; they cover my face pretty good. Oakley’s always been good to the surfers. All my [surfer] friends get boxes of Oakley. I’ve never approached Oakley myself because I just go to my friends and they give me the hand-me-downs – they’ve got more than they can handle. I like my Oakleys, they’re comfortable, they’re polarized and that’s all I need.”

Da Hui shorts

“Da Hui’s from Hawaii and I surf too, so that’s a great combination because Da Hui represents ‘respect’ in Hawaii, especially in the surfing community, our order of earning respect. All the Da Hui guys have always been nice to me. I go there and I train with them and they take me surfing, so we’ve got a good relationship.”

Flip camera

“I’ve had the Flip since it first came out. I’ve actually got to get a new one, this one I dropped in the water in Hawaii. It’s really helpful to film my training, film all the fun things that I do as a keepsake and also as a training tool. One of the best ways for me to learn is to watch myself and I’m my best critic.”

Mauli Ola Foundation hat

“I’m wearing my Mauli Ola Foundation hat. We take kids with cystic fibrosis, which is a genetic lung disease, we take them surfing and it helps heal their lungs. I’m actually coming out with a Nissen Osterneck signature hat, which will be available on www.mauliola.org. Mauli Ola means the breath of life.”

Ukulele

“I got my first ukulele when I was in, like, third grade. In Hawaii that’s one of the mandatory requirements: everybody learns ukulele in public school. Everywhere I go it means I can take a piece of Hawaii with me. I can relax and play ukulele to myself to get to sleep.”
