Fresh from his ‘Fight of the Night’ at WEC 49, the skilled 28 year-old Canadian featherweight talks gear with Fighters Only
Mark’s fought pro for eight years, over 25 fight camps. And there’s no substitute for that sort of experience.
Undefeated during his time as a lightweight in the UFC, Mark Hominick calls the WEC home now. Names such as Jorge Gurgel and Yves Edwards are chalked up in his win column. His tastes for gym equipment suggest a fighter who’s particular about what he likes and respects the safety of his training partners. There’s also an unusual piece of gear he uses to help himself cut weight...
WEC Kitbag
Mark: “They gave it to us at the UFC summit and it just kind of reminds me who I’m with every day and just makes me work towards the fight.”
Puma Shoes
“These are my weightlifting shoes. Flat soled, because I do a lot of Olympic lifts. With the running shoes there’s too much absorption when you do heavy squats and whatnot. The other pair are Nike Shox. I use them for sprints, running and outdoor training.”
Whip MMA Gloves
“They’re 6oz gloves so they’re safer for everybody when you’re sparring – you can actually make some contact. A lot of the MMA gloves are only 4oz so you can get a lot of cuts. It’s horrible getting ready for a fight when you have a cut.”
Whip Boxing Gloves
“These are Fitz ‘The Whip’ Vanderpool boxing gloves that I use for mitts. They’re Olympic-style so they’re rounded. I like a round glove for pad work as opposed to a square glove.”
Built to Fight Boxing Gloves
“I’m pretty particular with my hands, so I like these gloves. They’re a good mould.”
Hayabusa Shin Guards
“I wear a slightly thicker shinpad, just to prevent injuries. Sometimes shinpads for kickboxing are a little too thin, so you get really banged up while you’re sparring a lot – two, three times a week. A little thicker is always safer.”
Headgear
“Again, I’m pretty particular. It’s the style that they use for the Olympics. It’s comfortable and it fits my head right.”
Mouthpiece
“At the UFC summit they made all of the UFC and WEC fighters custom mouthguards with our names on.”
Thai Liniment
“Thai liniment comes from my Thai boxing days. It’s a good way to warm up, or before training – maybe throw some on if your muscles are tight.”
Grizzly Fitness Wrist Straps
“These are just for weightlifting. I don’t want my hands to get banged up just because I’m always hitting things and whatnot, so it just keeps a little bit more support on the wrists for lifting.”
Waist Tie
“In the last couple weeks of a fight camp I’ll use it when I’m running to help me cut weight. It’s just a waist tie so it makes you sweat around the waist a little bit more.”
Wedding Ring Box
“I have a box for my wedding ring because I’d lose it otherwise, no question!”
