In For A Penny, In For A Pound

It’s only a matter of time until I hear the words ‘Cain Velasquez’ and ‘best pound-for-pound’ together and I can honestly tell you it is going to annoy me when I do. What is the obsession with pound-for-pound lists? In reality how many fighters are actually eligible? Right now I can only think of two true candidates: GSP and Anderson Silva. They are both on impressive unbeaten runs as champions and have shown an ability to win fights in different areas. Each fighter has nearly cleaned out their respective weight classes too, leaving Dana White a hell of a job trying to find top-quality opponents.

I could listen to cases for a couple of other fighters in Bibiano Fernandes and Jose Aldo but I feel they both need another win or two, and until recently other fighters eligible would have been Fedor Emelianenko and BJ Penn. But, some of the names I see on people’s pound-for-pound lists are unbelievable. Fabricio Werdum, Shane Carwin and Jake Shields are all top fighters with big-name victories I agree, but definitely not pound-for-pound the best on the planet.

With regards to Mr Velasquez’s recent title victory I would say it puts him in the pound-for-pound region but until he gets through a couple of bouts then he shouldn’t be considered. Let’s be honest, Junior Dos Santos has great hands and could quite easily end the champion’s night with an early victory when the two meet. I don’t mind ‘p4p’ lists but, come on, let’s be realistic... I mean, Werdum?!

Thanks, John Russell

The posts that caught our eye this month in the online world of Fighters Only

Aaron Menard: Great article in Fighters Only this month about nutrition.

It offers a heck of a lot of insight into what exactly it takes to fuel a fighter.

Spilledbagofice: Seriously @FightersOnly, how is there not a ‘most

awesome MMA tweets’ category in your World MMA Awards?! C’mon, son!

CamyMuaythai: @FightersOnly I’m up for WEC/UFC merger. Means every card will be exciting because I can’t remember a bad WEC card from undercard to main event.

Jay Haywood: Once Maynard has beaten Edgar we will get to see how Aldo deals with the step up… He is one hell of a fighter though.

Sam Garvin: Brock or Mir [should fight Roy Nelson next]. And anybody that doesn’t like Nelson is an idiot. That dude is a beast on the ground, standing, or at the buffet.

Gary McLaughlin: Why is everyone hating on Lesnar? Big deal if he was in WWE years ago. But Cain was brilliant, picked him apart with his punches and, although I’m a Lesnar fan, I was delighted to see Cain win. Very humble and honest fighter. Him and Junior Dos Santos will be epic. As for Jake Shields, no way is he ready for a title match with GSP at 170 pounds – he needs another fight to get used to the weight cut.

Jon Mourton: At least [Dan Hardy] had the balls to take defeat like a man instead of hiding behind 101 excuses like most seem to these days. He’ll be back strong.

Gareth_Shields: If @ShogunRua defends his title and still wants to fight @Randy_Couture, would that be novelty enough for ‘The Natural’? @ufc @FightersOnly
