Proud owner of a 32gb iPod Touch, welterweight slugger Pete Sell likes music that’s hard, gritty and from the streets – just like his fighting style.

How long have you had an iPod?

I’ve had the old-school ones, the big doofy ones. When this one came out I upgraded to the iPod Touch. I’m getting with the times now!

So you’re not a big techy guy?

I wouldn’t say that; I’m simple, man – I just don’t care! Whatever gets me by, I’m easy, you know? My friends were on me because I still used this big old cell-phone. I don’t need all the nonsense.

What kind of music do you like to walk out to?

One I’ve used recently is ‘Rider Pt. 2’ by 50 Cent. I like that. I just like bassy stuff, rap / hip hop type things. There’s gangster songs that I like and rap songs that are hard. I like what they mean – Mobb Deep-type stuff. Anything that’s rugged and comes out hard, I like stuff like that – pumped-up beats. You’ve got to go a little commercial, something to get fired up to, you know?

Do you like the same kind of music when you’re training?

Oh yeah, always, all the time. Matt [Serra]’s a big fan, we have a good time with that.

What about when you’re in the car or just chilling?

I’ll tell you, over the last few years I’ve changed my views. Growing up I was a rap guy and that was it, I thought everything else was corny. It’s how I was, how my friends were. Nowadays, whatever it is, rock ‘n roll, whatever. I’ll give it to them; they’ve got some good songs out there.

Do you have a favorite rap artist?

Back in high school I was on every new song coming out, I was always so excited about it. Now, I’m just busy with my life, my iPod is all dated, there are a lot of old songs. I don’t even have a favorite; I’m behind the times now.

THE SHUFFLE CHALLENGE

Hit shuffle on your iPod and name the first five songs that come up. No cheating!

1. Gnarles Barkley feat. Joe Budden, ‘Crazy’ remix

It’s like a remix or something, ‘Going Crazy’, you know? You know what it is, you need a lot of different songs. And for me, I’ve got to make 170 now; you’re on the treadmill for like 45 mins or an hour, day in day out, six days a week – it gets boring. You need something to occupy your mind.

2. Rob Zombie, Stuck in the Mud

I had a soundtrack from House of 1000 Corpses on my computer, from iTunes. I don’t even listen to it at all, it’s just on there.

3. DJ Cinema, Blow (The Movie)

Oh that’s funny, one of my boys, DJ Cinema. He’s one of the barbers at the barbershop I go to; he’s playing here in Vegas soon. It’s one of my boy’s mixes.

4. Jadakiss, Grind Hard

Jadakiss is good. He’s hard, man. A lot of my beginner fights, I came out to Jadakiss. He’s from the street; he’s hard and he stays hard. He’s hardcore and keeps it real to his roots.

5. Eminem, 8 Mile Freestyle Battles

That’s from the movie. I’m a big Eminem fan; he’s got knowledge to what he talks about. There’s usually a meaning behind what he does. Guys like Eminem tell a story. He really knows what he’s doing.
