Your guide to what’s been going on in the world of MMA.
Kimbo Slice to return in May
Kevin ‘Kimbo’ Slice Ferguson will return to the UFC Octagon on May 1. The former street-fighting sensation will square off with a TUF 10 housemate in Matt Mitrione.
Fighting on the pay-per-view section of the UFC 113 card, to be held in Montreal in May, this will be Slice’s second outing in the Octagon and his sixth professional MMA contest.
UFC 113 takes place at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and features the rematch between light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and challenger Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua in the main event.
Mitrione, a former NFL player, beat Marcus Jones via knockout in his one and only pro MMA fight to date.
Alvarez vs Neer in Bellator
Spanish-language MMA promotion Bellator Fighting Championships have signed former UFC fighter Josh Neer (27-9-1) to face off against their lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez (19-2-0).
Neer has said he’s excited about facing Alvarez, consistently described as one of the most exciting lightweight fighters in the world. “I don’t see Alvarez just going to try and take me down and lie on me for three rounds because I don’t think that’s the type of fighter that he is,” Neer said. “I don’t want to go into a fight where my whole game-plan is to not get laid on. That’s what my last two fights were. I had to prepare to try and submit them because I knew they weren’t going to try and fight me. I just want to fight guys that are going to come in and actually fight.”
Dana White: Herb is best in business
UFC president Dana White has said he believes Herb Dean is the best referee in the history of the sport. Speaking to members of the UFC Fight Club, he told fans of his support for Dean, while slipping in a dig at one of his least favorite officials, referee Steve Mazzagatti. When asked if the UFC would ever use helmet cameras on their referees (White said the chances are “slim”), the outspoken UFC exec said that if they ever did get it, Steve Mazzagatti could fit the camera inside his head due to the amount of room in there.
Taking over the world, one country at a time
According to UFC insiders, the next three countries being targeted by the UFC are China, South Korea and India. UFC co-owner and executive Lorenzo Fertitta is working on getting a TUF season in those countries right now, says Dana White.
The UFC is also working to get into Japan and Brazil. White describes Japan as ‘difficult’ to get into, and admits Brazil wasn’t initially a target but, since it was announced the country would hold the Olympics, the UFC is now very interested in holding an event there.
Mike Swick-Roger Huerta: holiday bromance
With beautiful secluded beaches and bronzed bodies, Mike Swick and Roger Huerta’s latest video blogs could be mistaken for the beginnings of a cheesy romance novel.
But the two Texans, on holiday together halfway across the world in Thailand, have produced a video diary of their trip that would put ‘Jackass’ to shame. From falling off motorbikes to eating fried insects and even visiting a real ‘wall of death’, the two fighters have put together their very own ‘alternative travel guide’ to Southeast Asia.
