Things we hear, things we see, things we know.
BJ finally gets GSP
Penn has been calling for it since last year, and it looks like he’s finally getting his wish. The Hawaiian will move up to welterweight to rematch champion Georges St Pierre. The Canadian edged out Penn in a split decision back in 2005, and ‘The Prodigy’ has been clamouring for revenge ever since. The lightweight champ will move up to 170lb for the fight, scheduled for January 2009.
Randy’s back
Captain America himself has returned from suspended animation. ‘The Natural’ was stuck in limbo, battling with the UFC on courtrooms across the US. They finally came to an agreement and now everything I back to as it should be – with the heavyweight champion defending his title in November against none other than Brock Lesnar. Holy moly. The victor will fight the winner of Frank Mir and Minotauro in a four-man face off for the undisputed title. And you thought the heavyweight division was dull!
War Machine is a dick
John Koppenhaver, the heavily tattooed fighter from TUF 6 who legally changed his name to ‘War Machine’, prides himself on being a controversial figure. Well, it seems that he went too far in jointly lashing out at the recently-deceased Evan Tanner and his bosses, the UFC. Writing on his MySpace, he claimed Tanner committed suicide and that it was all a result of the UFC not paying their fighters enough. He was promptly cut from their books. What a shame.
It’s a good time to be a bookworm
You’ll find an interview with author Kelly Crigger, who wrote the recently released Title Shot: Into the Shark Tank of MMA, on page 50. Hot on the heels of this excellent book is Cage Talk, written by regular Fighters Only contributor Jim Page, out in October. We’ve heard of a number of other writers are hard at work on books about MMA and with the UFC releasing two collections of photography in the last few months, our book shelves are starting to fill up nicely.
