Issue 042

November 2008

The rolling Kimura was popularised largely thanks to the unorthodox judo stylist Parisyan. Parisyan used this technique to spectacularly finish Dave Strasser at UFC 44. He employs this technique from a variety of set-ups, here we see the kimura from an over-under tie-up.

1) Pete (no shirt) and Rob are tied up high in a 50-50, one overhook and one underhook each, mirroring each other’s position.

2) Pete takes his overhooking arm and places his thumb on the inside of Rob’s elbow, forcing his underhook down.

3) Pete slides his arm down again and grips Rob’s wrist.

4) Pete rests his shin across Rob’s hip.

5) Pete pulls his underhook out and reaches over Rob’s arm.

6) Pete makes the figure-four grip. Note that Pete has now put his thumb next to his fingers instead of holding around the wrist.

7) Pete jumps his foot behind Rob’s foot.

8) Pete sits back as his foot lands.

9) Pete uses the momentum, his shin and the Kimura hold to steer Rob over onto his back.

10) Pete starts to spin as Rob’s back hits the mat.

11) Pete slides his bottom leg over Rob’s head.

12) Pete walks back around clearing Rob’s head.

13) Pete sits through and with all his weight on Rob’s shoulder cranks the kimura to finish.
