Issue 042
October 2008
The summer months were busy enough, but from now until the end of the year there will be plenty going on.
We spoke to four people from the world of MMA to find out what they thought of the months ahead.
The Fighter
Neil ‘Goliath’ Grove, heavyweight fighter from Cage Rage.
The Writer
James Lees, regular FO contributor from Glasgow.
The Fan
Darren Miller, 38, a martial arts instructor from Sussex.
The Insider
Stephen ‘The Fight Professor’ Quadros, commentator.
This month’s HOT questions
Could Brock Lesnar ever become UFC champ?
Neil ‘Goliath’ Grove
I don’t know him personally, but I’m sure he used a few steroids to get into the shape he is. He definitely looks the part but against someone like Randy or Fedor, no.
James Lees
Without a doubt.
The UFC doesn’t exactly have the strongest heavyweight line-up and if Brock continues to improve, we’ll see him as champion for sure.
Darren Miller
Yeah, yeah, he definitely could, but he probably needs to learn some submissions.
Stephen ‘The Fight Professor’ Quadros
I feel he has a very good chance. Only Mir and Nogueira are in Lesnar’s way. And Brock gave Mir plenty of problems. Lesnar might be unstoppable in the UFC.
If you could grow a Kimbo-style beard, would you?
Neil ‘Goliath’ Grove
[Laughs] No! I tell you why, it would probably be grey!
James Lees
I think that if I grew a Kimbo-style beard I’d just look like some kind of psychotic axe murdering Scotsman, so no.
Darren Miller
No! I don’t think I would! Probably think we were separated at birth or something.
Stephen ‘The Fight Professor’ Quadros
I already have, many times. I just shave it off right before I come out of hiding or go on camera.
Sprawl ‘n brawl or ground ‘n pound?
Neil ‘Goliath’ Grove
Sprawl and brawl. I don’t mind to wrestle, but I prefer to stand up and fight.
James Lees
Sprawl ‘n brawl, just purely for the fact that it’s more exciting to watch.
Darren Miller
Sprawl and brawl, no question!
Stephen ‘The Fight Professor’ Quadros
The ultimate ‘chicken or the egg’ question. Sprawl ‘n brawl, baby. But to quote the old English new wave band The Fixx, “One thing leads to another”.
EliteXC currently use 3 min rounds for women. Should they continue or use standard 5 min rounds instead?
Neil ‘Goliath’ Grove
No disrespect to the girls, but in my personal opinion, I don’t think women should be fighting at all. You’ve got to give it to them, but it’s just not for me.
James Lees
Five-minute rounds for sure. There are some tough-as-nails female MMA fighters out there. They should be given the same opportunity as everyone else.
Darren Miller
Yeah, I think if you want things to be equal, they should be equal.
Stephen ‘The Fight Professor’ Quadros
Yes, women fights should be fought with five-minute rounds, just like the men’s are. 3 min rounds are patronising.
BJ Penn vs GSP: Who takes it?
Neil ‘Goliath’ Grove
Hmm… I love both of them, they’re absolutely awesome. If it’s a stand up war, GSP, if it’s going to the ground, BJ.
James Lees
I’ll go with GSP. He looks unstoppable right now. I’d really love to see the winner go up against Anderson Silva in the future.
Darren Miller
GSP, because he’s heavier. Skill-wise, BJ Penn, but man-to-man GSP would take it.
Stephen ‘The Fight Professor’ Quadros
Yikes. Both are solid ‘pound for pound’ candidates. I’ll make a decision by the time my preview at BudoVideos.com comes out the week of the event.
