UFC fighter Jason Tan used superb grips and slick transitioning to avoid being struck and catch Dutchman Joey Van Wanrooij in a textbook triangle choke during the early days of his career on UK promotion Cage Gladiators.

Step 1: Pete has Matt’s back with both hooks in, he’s looking for a choke and Matt is defending with hand fighting.
Step 2: Pete swaps his wrist control to the opposite hand and starts to strike to soften Matt up for the choke.
Step 3: Matt defends, blocking with his opposite hand.
Step 4a: Matt turns, and tries to strike down. Note Pete maintains wrist control, allowing him to control Matt’s posture. Pete blocks Matt’s strikes with the blade of his foot.
Step 4b: Reverse angle.
Step 5: Pete takes wrist control
Step 6: Pete pushes off the hip with his left leg and changes the angle with his right leg climbing it high on Matt’s neck.
Step 7: Pete locks his shin down with his left hand.
Step 8: Pete lifts his left leg off the hip.
Step 9: Pete locks his left leg down to close the triangle.
Step 10: Pete pulls down on the back of Matt’s head with both hands.
Step 11: Pete lifts his hips to add pressure to the triangle and prevent the stack.
