Issue 046
February 2009
With so many events taking place around the world, it’s impossible feature them all, but here is a selection of the notable events from the last month.
Biggest Upset
Efrain Escudero over Phillipe Nover
When you saw him getting bullied by Junie and his sidekick in the house, did you ever think Efrain Escudero would go on to win the entire show? We certainly didn’t, and we didn’t expect him to maul Phillipe Nover the way he did, either.
Submission of the Month
Krzystof Soszynski
The heavily tattooed Team Quest light heavyweight struggled with a broken hand during the filming of TUF 8 but still gave a glimpse of his ability. Back to full fitness, the southpaw Soszynski put on a solid display of submission grappling, almost yanking Shane Primm’s arm out of the socket.
KO of the Month
Josh Koscheck
Earning his second highlight-reel big KO of the year, Koscheck looked like a different man against Yoshiyuki Yoshida, compared to the fighter who had faced off with Thiago Alves only a few weeks before.
‘Debut’ of the Month
Wagnney Fabiano
Brazilian featherweight Wagnney Fabiano had been making waves in the IFL, but was left out in the cold when the promotion went under. Finally signed to the WEC (the home of the best 145lb fighters in the world), Fabiano made an emphatic debut by defeating Akitoshi Tamura with only 12 seconds left on the clock. Definitely one to watch.
Sweetest Revenge
Anthony Johnson vs Kevin Burns
A dark cloud hung over the result from their first fight as Johnson suffered an accidental but severe finger to the eye. Back from surgery to repair his scratched cornea, Johnson earned sweet revenge by knocking Burns out with a pin-point kick to the jaw.
Most Blatant Advertising of the Month
Jonathan Goulet
Goulet always breaks out the hair dye for his fights, but his last couple have seen him give Vidal Sassoon a run for his money with some very elaborate styling.
Most Improved Fighter
Junie Browning
The enfant terrible looks set to mature into an exciting and skilled fighter. Lets just hope he manages to keep his drinking under control long enough to realise his potential.
