Ribeiro in motorbike accident
WEC bantamweight fighter Will Ribeiro has suffered major injuries in a motorcycle accident in Brazil. Ribeiro was riding pillion on a motorbike in his home city of Rio de Janeiro when the bike slid on rain-slick streets. Rushed to hospital for emergency treatment, Ribeiro went into a coma and has reportedly suffered severe permanent injuries as a result of the crash. “My assistant said that the doctor said that he (Ribeiro) has lost sight in one of his eyes,” Ed Soares, Ribeiro’s manager, said. We at Fighters Only wish Will a speedy recovery.
Alves earns his shot
Bad-ass Brazilian welterweight Thiago Alves has put himself in number one contention for the 170lb title, Dana White has said. With seven straight victories in the Octagon, Alves is hungry for a shot at the champ, but he must wait his turn further still as GSP will take on reigning 155lb champion BJ Penn first. White says that Alves is first in line for a pop at the winner.
Manhoef wants Kimbo!
Two of the scariest fighters to ever enter a cage look set to tussle, according to rumours from Japan. Kimbo, the bearded street fighter-turned-mixed martial artist, went to Tokyo for the recent K-1 Grand Prix finals, the heavyweight kickboxing event that draws a massive amount of viewers around the world.
Fighting on the undercard was Dutch striker Melvin Manhoef, who beat his opponent by first round KO. The two engaged in a backstage exchange of words, with the Dutchman calling out the Miami resident. Manhoef has enjoyed mixed success in MMA and K-1, but it is worth noting he fights against heavyweights, despite only weighing 190lb and standing 5’8” tall. Kimbo is coming off a disastrous loss to Seth Petruzelli. The ultra-quick defeat means his stock has plummeted in the US, and it is thought Kimbo wants to test his stand-up out against the best kickboxers in the world in K-1.

Tito Ortiz joins Affliction
Sorry if the title is misleading, but it is true. Tito Ortiz has joined Affliction, but the ‘Huntington Beach Bad Boy’ hasn’t signed to fight. The bleached-blond light heavyweight will step into the commentary booth as part of the broadcast team for their event on 24 January. Whether this is a step towards Ortiz joining the promotion as a fight remains to be seen.
Arlovski gets personal
Though he is your typical ice-cold Russian, nobody can accuse Andrei Arlovski of not having a sense of humour. When confronted with the news old rival Tim Sylvia had allegedly slept with his Playmate ex-girlfriend, Arlovski asked of Tim, “How taste my big pee-pee?” Since then, Arlovski has taken to referring to Sylvia simply as ‘pee-pee taste’ in interviews. It seems that some wounds never heal – we’re waiting for a response from Sylvia with baited breath!
