An MMA fighter, Muay Thai boxer, TV presenter and music fan, Kit Cope’s customized iPod contains all manner of crazy stuff.

Do you have a style of music you like to train to?

I do. I like the harder, metal-type stuff, ‘Killswitch Engage’-type stuff. But unfortunately, because this is his gym, Wanderlei likes techno. He loves the techno, and he loves any other song turned into techno, which is uber-annoying.

So you’re not a big fan of the mash-up?

I like some mash-ups, I like rock-rap mash-ups. Just anything that involves techno, I’m not into it. You will find some on my iPod though.

What about when you’re driving. What’s in your CD player?

Do people still have CDs? I have Sirius satellite radio, which I keep glued to Faction 28 for Mr Jason Ellis. Jason is a former pro skateboarder and master of the mega-ramp. He’s awesome, hilarious. He’s got my taste in music too.

Do you have a ‘trademark’ entrance song?

Not really, because new songs come into fashion, or I’ll re-find old songs.  It’s whatever gets me pumped up at that time.  It’s not always something that pumps me up, but maybe something that I think will get the crowd pumped up, or laugh. Last time I came in to the Imperial March from Star Wars.

Was it the original or a mash-up?

It was a mash-up! DJ Obi-wan did it for me. Also, he’s a professional Muay Thai boxer. But the music I use to get pumped up I listen to on the way to training, as opposed to during training. I need to coast into training while in the zone. It could be anything. It could be Michael [Jackson] – some old-school MJ. But if it’s Tuesdays or Thursdays, I’ll go with some Killswitch or some Static-X. Maybe even back to some old Pantera.

Tell us about your MP3 player.

If you notice, it says Kit Cope, Wild World of Spike [TV show Cope was part of] on the back, engraved. They gave it us, it’s the video-iPod thing [80GB iPod classic]. I don’t know how to use the video. Actually I don’t even know how to use it at all apart from how to push play.  But my friend Trinny and his girl and I all share an iTunes account, that’s why I have all their stuff on here too.

THE SHUFFLE CHALLENGE

Hit shuffle on your iPod and name the first five songs that come up.

No cheating!

1. Hand on the Pump, by Cypress Hill

That wasn’t my choice, but I do get into a little Cypress Hill on there. That song would probably pump me up for going to Stockton! Visiting the boys and doing the Diaz training regimen...

2. Don’t Care by Slightly Stoopid

Wow, another ganja-smoking song! Really cool band, a bunch of skinny white reggae dudes that sing exclusively about smoking pot.

3. Sooner or Later by Breaking Benjamin.

Breaking Benjamin have a couple of decent songs. That’s not one of them.

4. Love is Stronger Than Pride by Sade

[laughs] I’m sure there is a story behind that song, but it’s not my story! Hey, I dig on my Sade though.

5. Older Gods by Wu-Tang Clan

That’s a great song actually. Wu-Tang are a band that, if I’m feeling a little rebellious against the man, I want to come take it out in the gym. I’ll listen to a little Wu-Tang, or a little Immortal Technique. They’re right there with the same message.

Kit Cope spoke with Gary Alexander.
