As mentioned in this month’s article ‘Mind Games: Psychological Warfare in MMA’ on page 54, the stare-down is a pivotal moment. Fighters must be prepared to engage in a stare-down many times; the pre-fight press conferences, weigh-ins, and during the referee’s final instructions in the center of the Octagon. Here, Lyoto Machida and ‘Shogun’ Rua go head-to-head ahead of their October light heavyweight title fight – made all the more interesting by the fact that they had been sat next to each other on the flight from Brazil to LA only a few hours before.
