Issue 038
June 2008
1. Pete is on top in Gary’s half guard. Pete has the underhook on the far side and is using it to pin Gary’s shoulders to the mat. Pete has achieved a bicep control on the near arm.
2. Pete lets go of the bicep control, bringing his arm up to strike...
3. ...and drops the fist with the weight of his shoulder down on Gary’s chin.
4. Now that the punch has opened up the channel to strike, Pete follows up by dropping the elbow.
5. Gary has the underhook, giving him a path to the back or the sweep. He has placed his knee on Pete’s hip, letting him push and pull in tandem with the underhook, giving him some control over the distance.
6. Pete whizzers the arm to stop Gary taking the back....
7. …and steps his leg away to prevent Gary getting the old-school sweep.
8. Pete punches straight down.
9. Note that he whizzers the arm hard, stopping Gary from having an effective underhook on his shoulder.
10. Pete brings his elbow straight up and high…
11. …dropping it hard on the temple.
12. When Gary defends the downward blows he is vulnerable to hooks from the side.
13. Note how the whizzer on the far side prevents him from defending himself with both hands.
