The South West of England is perfectly positioned for fighters from nearby South Wales to travel to, and it seemed like every other fight on this event featured a fighter from the ‘Valleys’.
One of the evening’s most entertaining fights was the professional debut of Tim Newman, a highly rated semi-professional fighter long tipped to shine in the paid ranks. His back and fore contest with Jim Burman (not the same Jim Burman as the one who works for this magazine, although we had to double check) saw Newman play the first two rounds out in southpaw and work his developing striking game. Switching to orthodox in the third round, he finally won via an armbar in an impressive display.
The other performance of note was that of Icelandic welterweight fighter ‘Shotgun’ Gunnar Nelson. At 19 years of age, his clinical dismantling of game opponent Barry Mearas showed a maturity beyond his years. With excellent positioning and balance, he used a devastatingly precise ground and pound game to put his opponent to sleep midway through the first round.
