Ankle lock
1. Karl is standing in Gunni’s open guard, controlling the legs.
2. He drops level and traps one of Gunni’s legs between his knees, with the lower leg at his hip.
3. Karl wraps his right forearm around the leg and drops backwards, keeping a tight grip with his knees on the leg. Note that his right foot is on Gunni’s hip.
4. To finish the submission, Karl brings the blade of the forearm up on Gunni’s Achilles tendon and arches his back, causing great pain.
Calf crush / Ankle lock combo
1. Karl begins to perform an arm-drag on Gunni from guard.
2. Having pulled Gunni off-centre, Karl puts his left leg over the back of Gunni’s right leg.
3. Reverse angle: You can see that Karl has pulled Gunni completely past the centre-line.
4. Karl brings his right arm over Gunni’s back and takes a grip on Gunni’s shin with his left hand
5. Gripping Gunni’s leg with both hands, Karl drops back and cranks on the leg for the tap.
Rolling toehold
1. Karl is in Gunni’s open guard. He is controlling the legs.
2. Holding the toes on Gunni’s left foot with his right hand, Karl spins and begins to attack the leg.
3. Holding onto the foot, he rolls over his shoulder, using his leg to hook Gunni’s free leg.
4. Reverse angle: you can see Karl has already established the ‘figure-four’ grip on the foot.
5. Having completed the roll, Karl keeps Gunni’s free leg pinned to the mat with his own and finishes the submission by pushing on the toes.
