Why the lanky, all-action UFC featherweight can’t watch a TV series like everyone else.

TV

We see you are an Arrested Development fan.

“There is a lot of TV that I’m in to. I don’t get to watch TV on a regular basis; I watch a lot of stuff on Netflix. I love the Entourage series, Nip/Tuck, Arrested Development – I am really into a bunch of the Netflix original series. Justified is a great series, Sons of Anarchy is too, as is American Horror Story. Dexter is one of my favourites even though the last season was garbage (laughs) – overall the series was really good. There is a lot of TV I enjoy.”

We’ve talked to a number of fighters who have gone away from movies and more toward TV because you can get that rich character and story development that you can’t always get in a movie.

“Yeah, and the way that I watch TV, I watch the TV shows as movies. When I buy them on DVD or Blu-ray I literally watch them in a whole day or even a whole weekend. I won’t stop. I’ll keep going.

“I watch TV series as if it is one big movie. Say that season five comes out, I will literally go back and watch the first four seasons as a marathon. When the next season, season six, comes out I will go back and watch seasons one through five. I will watch them over and over. You will always pick up something you missed the first time around. But in watching a series from week to week you get more engrossed.”

CARS

What are you driving right now?

“I just traded in my 2009 Honda Accord for a 2014 Accord. That is my daily driver. That is what I use to get around. I have a project car, a 1992 Honda Civic hatchback. It is getting bodywork and a few other things done right now. Hopefully at some point this year you will see it grace the pages, or maybe even the cover, of a few car magazines.”

What was your first car?

“What the heck was it called? It was a 1990 or 1991 Pontiac Sunbird. That was the first car I got to drive.”

STYLE

How would you define your style?

“I just wear T-shirts and board shorts most of the time living here in South Florida. Under normal circumstances in a regular setting I wear slim-fit jeans, Converse Chuck Taylors and a random shirt of a favourite band of mine, or something like that.”

Are you a brand guy? Are you in to certain brand name clothing?

“Not really. I don’t really subscribe to that kind of thing.”

MUSIC

What style or genre of music are you a fan of?

“I like the pop rock genre, or just rock. I grew up listening to Green Day. Genres are so hard to label nowadays. I like Dashboard Confessional and Conor Oberst; I listen to MxPx, I like Bright Eyes. I’ll listen to stuff like that. I bounce around and listen to a lot of different stuff.”

FLICKS

What type of movies are you into?

“I like pretty much every genre as long as the movie is good. I don’t like romantic comedies – however, I do like romance movies and comedies separately (laughs). I like drama, independent films and foreign films. And I don’t like suspense thrillers or the new-age horror movies. They are more suspense than anything.

“What happened to the old horror movies? In my mind a horror movie is scary every single time you watch it even when you know what’s coming. Today I like to call those McMovies. It’s like they make these things in a week and keep churning them out.”

What is your single favourite movie?

“I like The Matrix, the first one. That was such a great film for its time. Just the movie and the story was really good. That is one I can watch over and over again.”
