As this month’s feature fighters are the Chute Boxe stars Shogun and Ninja Rua, we felt that including techniques popularised by the famous Brazilian team in the PRIDE ring was a must.
The following techniques are only legal in certain events, and these are generally only found in countries such as Japan and Brazil, where kicking and stomping attacks to the head of a downed opponent are not considered fouls. Practice the following moves with care, and remember they are best done while a cornerman or trainer stands to one side and shouts “Heyyy!” with every strike!
Technique 1: Stomp through the guard
1. Matt starts by holding Martin’s leg to stop him from kicking him in the face, keeping good balance to avoid being swept.
2. Matt postures up, bringing his back leg up with him.
3. He raises one knee high and to the side. It is important he does not bring it straight up in front of him.
4. He circles his leg over and around Martin’s legs so that it is directly between them.
5. He finishes by delivering a stomp to the face.
Technique 2: Escape from leglock to soccer kick
1. In this case, Matt has tried a stomp the head as in technique one, but missed. Martin Has trapped the leg and is threatening to attack with a leglock.
2. Matt’s right leg is trapped, so he turns away to his left and pulls the leg out forcefully.
3. He circles 360 degrees…
4. …until he is facing Martin once again.
5. Matt uses the momentum of the escape to spin all the way around and finish with the kick. This technique should be performed in one fluid motion.
Technique 3: Mount to stomp
1. Martin is in mount and attacking with ground and pound.
2. He delivers a strong right to distract Matt.
3. Martin pins both of Matt’s arms to his chest.
4. Keeping the weight on Matt’s upper body, Martin pops up to his feet.
5. He lifts his foot up high…
6. …to attack with a brutal stomp to the face.
Technique 4: Sprawl to soccer kick
1. Matt is sprawled out following an attempted takedown or similar by Martin.
2. Matt stuffs Martin’s head to the mat and pops up to his feet. It is important to keep the weight on to stop Martin reattempting to shoot.
3. Matt circles to one side to line up his attack.
4. He delivers a soccer kick to the head.
Technique 5: Kimura counter to stomp
1. Matt attacks Martin with a kimura from half guard bottom
2. Keeping his weight down and arm underneath him, Martin escapes the legs.
3. With his legs free, Martin keeps his weight down on Matt and begins a standard ‘run-around’ kimura counter.
4. He circles around to the other side of Matt’s body.
5. Matt has kept hold of the arm but is now in danger of being armbarred. Instead, Martin has another attack in mind.
6. Martin postures up sharply and pulls Matt’s arm with him…
7. …and delivers a stomp to the head.
Training with pads ‘Chute Boxe-style’
Training stomps and soccer kicks cannot be done effectively on a partner without risk of serious injury. Chute Boxe get around this problem by having one partner lie down and hold a kick shield or Thai pads. From here, you are able to practice axe kicks (as in pictures 1-4), stomps (pictures 5-7) and even soccer kicks (pictures 8-10).
