Junior in Japan
Brazilian super heavyweight Antonio “Junior” Silva, also known as Pezao, would make his K-1 HERO’S debut on May 5th. Silva holds the CageWarriors super heavyweight title, as well as the Cage Rage World heavyweight title.
Scheduled for a superfight on the card, Juniors signing came at the same time as the former Sumo wrestler Akebono’s. It was made clear that they will not be facing each other though. Their opponents have yet to be named, though rumours of Bob Sapp have been linked with Junior.
‘Buzz’ Berry versus Dan ‘The Beast’ Severn
CAGE RAGE favourite Robert ‘Buzz’ Berry will face Dan ‘The Beast’ Severn on 3rd June. Severn will travel to England for the fight, to be held on the promotion Total Combat. Also featuring will be CageWarriors veteran Mario ‘Sukata’ Neto of Brazil (but resident in Merseyside) against Paul Bowers of the USA, a member of Team Beast. Interestingly, Sukata fought Severn back in 1996, in his first MMA fight. Severn won via decision after a total of 40 minutes of fighting.
Swedish champion wrestler enters MMA
MARTIN LIDBERG, a champion wrestler from Sweden, is to travel to the US to try out for K-1 HERO’S. Following the auditions, he is then fighting UK kickboxer Gary Turner in a limited-rules mixed martial arts bout on 20th May in Stockholm.
The Fight will feature on the K-1 Scandinavia event. The match rules are three rounds of standing striking and submission wrestling, but with no strikes on the ground.
“I’ve done very well in my wrestling career- won close to everything you can win within Greco Roman wrestling. European and World Championship gold medals, among other things,” said Lidberg.
“I know it’s going to be a tough call, but I train to adapt according to his style, and I hope my time to prepare, going on a month and a half, will be enough for a victory. I train now both in standing and submissions, and develop as a fighter every day.”
Lidberg competed against Dan Henderson in the quarterfinals of the 1996 Olympics, beating him on points. He lists Henderson as one of his favourite MMA fighters. Whether he can replicate the success of the PRIDE Welterweight champion will remain to be seen.
Trigg and Charuto both to retire?
THE FINALS of the Rumble on the Rock welterweight grand prix didn’t go so well for two MMA veterans. Carlos Condit submitted Frank Trigg by triangle choke inside the first round, while Kuniyoshi Hironaka TKO’d Renato ‘Charuto’ Verissimo in the second.
Both fighters are now said to be considering retirement. Trigg, an outstanding wrestler with MMA contests dating back to 1997, has a record of 13-5-0. He has won only one of his last four outings. Verissimo, 5-4-0, has lost four of his last five fights.

Tank coming to the UK!
As reported on Fighters Only Issue 12, David ‘Tank’ Abbott is due to hit the UK in July, and he is bringing some friends with him to ‘party’.
Appearing on Cage Rage 17 at the Wembley Arena, Tank takes on the enigmatic and unknown millionaire Kiane, his teammates John Marsh and Eddie Rua will face Tengiz Tedoradze and Marc Walder respectively.
John Marsh (7-5-0) is known as the man who infamously threw a water bottle at Wesley ‘Cabbage’ Correira at UFC 45 following his win over Tank. The incident sparked the first mass brawl between rival teams at a UFC event. Interestingly, Marsh later faced Correira at Rumble on the Rock in Hawaii, and defeated him by decision. Eddie Ruiz is a lightweight fighter with a 1-1-0 record. A tough all-rounder, he lost to Yves Edwards in the UFC by decision. Facing BJJ blackbelt Walder (2-1-0), it will be the first time either man has stepped foot in the ring since 2003.
