Issue 007

September 2005

FO: Why did you start training?

NB: I thought it would be fun. I started training in Goju Ryu Karate with my brother and dad as something we could do together.

FO: What made you interested in competing and which competitions have you entered?

NB: Competing was a natural progression for me as I wanted to put my skills to the test. I like to know what I do works under pressure and the MMA scene is the place to do that. So far I have had five fights at two events in the combat sports open trials.

FO: What did it feel like to be centre stage in your first competitive fight?

NB: Exciting, I trained hard so I was confident and eager to show my skills. All went well, a win by guillotine in 1min 30secs.

FO: How long have you been training?

NB: I have been involved in Martial Arts for many years, but my MMA training began one and a half years ago when I met my friend and teacher Sifu Alan Orr. He has opened my eyes and constantly surprises me.

FO: What sort of training regime do you follow?

NB: I train at least two hours a day either at my club or at home in my garage.

FO: What is the best aspect about training and competing?

NB: Training has given me focus in everything I do. It has given me goals and something to strive for, to me that’s priceless. The best thing about competing is the chance to put my skills to the test. I never want to have a false sense of security.

FO: What is your core discipline?

NB: Ying Hung/Chu Sau Lei Wing Chun. Many people say Wing Chun doesn’t work in the MMA scene but I am here to prove otherwise. It’s a lack of knowledge and understanding that leads people to believe this. Obviously, I train in other arts such as Catch Wrestling, but all my stand up and many other aspects of my game come from my Wing Chun training.

FO: Where and when did you have your first competitive fight?

NB: Seni 05 back in April, right next to the Fighters Only stand.

FO: What is your goal in competition?

NB: To constantly challenge myself and take it as far as it goes.

FO: Which competition are you looking forward to?

NB: First come first served, so my sights are set on the Open Trials Championships in October. I will be fighting for the Lightweight Championship and my friend and training partner Aren Baum for the Middleweight crown.
