Issue 008
October 2005
FO: Why did you start training?
JD: After watching ‘The Karate Kid’ I was running around my house doing flying kicks, so my brother signed me up to Falcons Martial Arts.
FO: What made you interested in competition?
JD: I saw the children and adults team fighting in a competition and I wanted to be a part of what I saw.
FO: What did it feel like to be centre stage in your first fight?
JD: I was quite young, about six years old when I entered my first fight, but I remember coming off the mat with a great sense of satisfaction and hungry for more.
FO: How long have you been training?
JD: I started training in Taekwondo in 1993 and from there the club has evolved to Kickboxing, Jui-jitsu and then MMA. So twelve years so far.
FO: What sort of training regime do you follow?
JD: I train five days a week with times varying. But through the regime we cover each aspect of MMA from fitness to technique.
FO: What is the best aspect about training and competing?
JD: The best aspect of training has got to be the friendships you form within the club, as well as the tests you put your body through. Competing, I’d say has got to be fighting as a part of a team, the atmosphere can’t be matched.
FO: What is your core discipline?
JD: I couldn’t really say a core discipline as Heath, our coach is constantly looking to improve each area of the game.
FO: Where and when did you have your first competitive fight?
JD: Fairwater Leisure Centre, Cwmbran back in April 1994. It was only semi contact back then though.
FO: What is your goal in competition?
JD: My goal in competition is not only to fight in Pride, but to dominate Pride and be known as one of the greats.
FO: Which competition are you looking forward to?
JD: The finals of the Welsh Grapple & Strike League. Me and two of the boys are through to the finals and hopefully along with us will be a big charity fight, featuring our very own Shakus Maximus.
