UFC Brasilia: Charles Oliveira submits Kevin Lee

Charles Oliveira made it seven wins in a row after submitting Kevin Lee in the main event of UFC Fight Night 170: Brasilia, the Brazilian capital city.

It was Oliveira’s most impressive performance to date. Unfortunately, the event was held behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak so fans were unable to see it in person, but that didn’t stop “Do Bronx” from putting on a show for those watching at home.

Lee perhaps looked to have edged things in the striking stakes in the opening round, but Oliveira – as ever – looked dangerous on the ground when the fight went there, threatening with heel hooks and a triangle choke attempt.

Oliveira kicked things up a couple of gears for the second round, appearing to hurt his foe with his punches, forcing Lee to take him down. Lee controlled Oliveira on the ground to avoid any submission danger, but that may have lulled him into a false sense of security.

In the third round, Lee shot for a single-leg takedown only to be met by a guillotine choke as Oliveira wrapped his long arms around his neck. Lee was forced to tap out, before trying to fight on as if he hadn’t, protesting the referee’s decision.

Massive win for Oliveira as he looks ever more likely to be a name included in the title contention mix. This win is his 14th submission win in the UFC, extending his existing record, while he now also boasts the second-longest finishing streak in UFC history. Not bad going for the Brazilian.

UFC Brasilia: Gilbert Burns knocks out Demian Maia

The UFC Fight Night 170: Brasilia co-main event featured to highly-regarded Brazilian submission artists, Demian Maia and Gilbert Burns.

Maia entered the Octagon on a three-fight win streak, but he left without that run in tact as Burns ended his night with a TKO victory inside the first round.

Unsurprisingly, and that’s despite Burns’ grappling credentials, Maia sought to take the fight to the ground almost immediately.

He got it with a single-leg takedown before seeking to take Burns’ back. However, after failing to successfully get both hooks in, Burns escaped the position and well and truly made Maia pay for it.

Burns launched a left hook which left Maia floored. The former paused, thinking his punch was enough to warrant a walk-off knockout, but referee Osiris Maia hadn’t yet called the fight off. Burns then resumed delivering the punishment to put a punctuation on his big punch with a series of ground-and-pound strikes to force the referee stoppage.

Impressive win for Burns, who is now on a five-fight winning streak.
