A simple solution to an opponent with good defense.

Vinny Magalhaes, the four-time world BJJ champion, 205lb fighter and instructor reveals his best no-gi techniques, with Casey Milliken.

1 - Vinny is in Casey’s half guard, who takes a defensive position with a high underhook on one side.

2 - Vinny tries to put his right arm through for a D’Arce choke, but he can’t get it in deep enough to grab his bicep.

3 - Instead, Vinny reaches back with his left hand and pops Casey’s chin up using the back of his thumb.

4 - Vinny doesn’t need anything as strong as a Gable grip, so he grabs the back of his left hand with his right for support.

5 - To keep Casey under control and prevent himself from being swept, Vinny sprawls his hips to the mat.

6 - Keeping his grip, Vinny pulls his elbows in and pulls his hands up to apply pressure and finish the guillotine.

TOP TIPS

WHITE BELT

If you can, always try for the D’Arce because it’s a much stronger move if you can lock it in.

PURPLE BELT

Don’t go too deep with your left arm and get your elbow under your opponent’s chin – it will be easier for them to defend by tucking their chin.

BLACK BELT

You can plan to use this move if your arms are too short or your opponent has wide shoulders, indicating that the D’Arce will be difficult.
