SKILL: MISSED SEIO NAGE TO JUJI GATAME (ARMBAR)

Jimmy (left) grips Bobby’s left lapel with his right hand, and Bobby grips Jimmy’s right lapel with his left hand. Their non-gripping hands are free but ready.

Bobby attempts a seio nage (or shoulder throw) by twisting 180 degrees as he drops to his knees, but fails to secure Jimmy’s right arm en route.

Immediately Jimmy attacks by setting up the juji gatame (or armbar). He begins by stepping his right leg inside Bobby’s right thigh.

Jimmy then shoots his right arm under Bobby’s right arm, and grabs Bobby’s right wrist with his left hand.

Jimmy then creates a figure-four by grasping his own left wrist with his right hand, and drops onto his head with the intent of pulling Bobby’s arm as far from the body as possible.

Looking to defend, Bobby will typically pull his arm in. This resistance is what allows Jimmy to turn onto his left shoulder and use his right leg to elevate Bobby onto his back.

Jimmy can now ensure he has control of Bobby’s head by having his left leg on top, and then lean his upper body toward Bobby’s head to give him the opportunity to break Jimmy’s defensive grip at the wrist with his left forearm.

To finish, Jimmy brings his right leg in front of Bobby’s chest, holds Bobby’s wrist and pushes with the hips to apply the juji gatame.
