A four-time World Jiu-Jitsu Championships gold medal winner, current UFC light heavyweight Vinny Magalhaes shares his best submission moves with the help of UFC middleweight Tom Lawlor. Here they demonstrate a perfect armbar from back control.
SKILL: ARMBAR FROM BACK CONTROL
1: The submission starts off with Vinny with back control on Tom, as he looks for the rear naked choke.
2: Tom looks to block the submission by throwing Vinny’s left arm over his own head. By doing this, he’s also blocked Vinny’s right arm from working for a choke too.
3: Vinny slips his right arm underneath Tom’s right arm and hooks it. Vinny grabs Tom’s right wrist with his left hand and
holds that left wrist his right hand to form a kimura grip to make sure Tom cannot escape.
4: Vinny leans right to give himself some space and removes his right hook, placing it tightly across Tom’s stomach. This is to make sure Tom isn’t able to escape into half guard.
5: Vinny then pushes up on Tom’s head with his left elbow to create some room to throw his left leg over Tom’s face.
6: From there, he is in the armbar position and can pull the arm back to finish the submission.
