Sneak into mount so your opponent has nowhere to go with this smooth hopping butterfly pass.
Greg Jackson: The most in-demand coach in MMA demonstrates the best techniques for the cage, with help from UFC flyweight John Dodson.
THE TECHNIQUE:
1 - John has butterfly guard – using his feet as hooks against the inside of his attacker’s legs – which stops Greg from advancing position.
2 - Greg pushes off John’s biceps to posture up and create space between them. This also control’s John’s posture.
3 - Greg pops up onto his feet and pinches his knees together around the outside of John’s legs.
4 - Greg uses his hands to push John’s thighs backward and force his legs underneath him.
5 - Greg drives his hips forward to slip over John’s guard.
6 - Now in a mount position, Greg can to throw strikes to finish the fight.
TOP TIPS:
AMATEUR
- Your opponent’s butterfly guard is most effective when they’re sat up, so always force their back to the mat to minimize the chance of being swept.
SEMI-PRO
- When in the mount position, cross your feet beneath your opponent’s butt to make it harder for them to re- establish their guard.
PROFESSIONAL
- There is very little you can do from butterfly guard when your opponent pops up to their feet. To counter this, switch to X-guard by kicking one of your butterfly hooks through their legs, bringing the same knee behind theirs and hooking your foot on their opposite hip.
