Kenny Johnson is one of the most esteemed wrestling coaches in MMA. Noted for his work with BJ Penn, he’s also taught Anderson Silva and was Team Nogueira’s wrestling guru on The Ultimate Fighter. He and UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes present wrestling techniques for MMA, here how to execute a perfect double lift off cage
SKILL: DOUBLE LIFT OFF CAGE
Note: This technique is done in one motion.
DO NOT STOP AGAINST THE CAGE!
1. Matt penetrates to the double-leg. Note: Matt’s level is low, back is straight and his head is up and tight to the ribs.
FINE POINT: Matt’s hands catch Kenny’s legs directly behind the knees.
2. Matt drives Kenny into the cage and at the same time extends him straight up not allowing Kenny to sprawl.
3. Matt then lowers his level as Kenny bounces back from the cage. Matt is in a solid position to begin to lift Kenny off the mat.
4. Matt lifts Kenny off the mat.
NOTE: Matt is lifting with his legs with a straight back and head tucked tight to Kenny’s side.
5. Matt completes the lift holding Kenny’s legs tight and turns away from the cage. This will allow Matt to hit a nice power slam to finish the move off with bad intentions!
NOTE: Matt can also use this controlled position to run his opponent to his corner and then power slam so he is by his own coaches, making it easier to hear their mid-fight advice.
