As the new NFL season dawns, we look at some of the most famous professional American Football players who have also competed in MMA.



HERSCHEL WALKER:


HERSCHEL WALKER: Probably the most famous NFL player to take up MMA which he did aged 47. Before NFL he achieved top awards in both college football and wrestling. His professional MMA record stands at 2 – 0.

BROCK LESNAR:


Lesnar built his fame in the WWE after which he had limited success at the Minnesota Vikings. Shuttling between professional wrestling and MMA, he is now back in the UFC challenging for the heavyweight belt.

BOB SAPP:


Sapp became a legend in Japan Fight Promotions due to his size and personality. He had limited competitive success in MMA but even less in the NFL where he played just one game for the Minnesota Vikings.

MATT MITRIONE:


After his football career was curtailed by injury, Mitrione took to MMA. A former UFC fighter and now Bellator athlete, Mitrione has a notable win over the fighting icon and legend that is Fedor Emelianenko.

BRENDAN SCHAUB:


After making the practice team for the Buffalo Bills, Schaub left football and took part in The Utimate Fighter, The Heavyweights. He used his fame to become a popular podcast host and TV presenter.

WES SHIVERS:


Another NFL player and The Ultimate Fighter The Heavyweights alumnus, Shivers played three NFL games for the Atlanta Falcons. He amassed a 7 – 1 professional record before pursuing a career in Hollywood.

HERBERT GOODMAN:


A former Green Bay Packers running back, Goodman has amassed a 19-11 record in MMA and has competed for King of the Cage and Bellator under the nickname of “Whisper” due to his softly-spoken demeanor.

ERYK ANDERS:


After leaving the Cleveland Browns, Anders switched to MMA. Prior to turning pro, he had a 22-fight amateur career. He currently has 10 wins, and his only pro defeat to date came from Lyoto Machida via split decision.
