Stuff a single-leg and set yourself up to take control of the fight with an effective takedown defense
Kenny Johnson, premier MMA wrestling coach with students including BJ Penn, José Aldo and Anderson Silva. Aided by Pedro Munhoz.
1. As Kenny throws a jab, Pedro changes levels underneath the strike to set up a single-leg takedown with his head on the inside.
2. Pedro steps forward and shoots. Kenny uses his left hand to stuff Pedro’s head down and secures a shallow whizzer with his right.
3. Kenny sprawls his right leg back – hard – and keeps his weight on Pedro’s head with his hips to prevent him from being taken down at the second attempt.
4. Kenny squares his hips and is now in the front-headlock position, staying low. Kenny controls Pedro’s tricep with his left hand and uses his right hand to cup Pedro’s chin.
5. By popping up to his feet and driving his weight forward into Pedro, Kenny achieves a dominant position and he can now look to transition to the next position, throw strikes or set up a submission.
TOP TIPS
HIGH SCHOOL
When transitioning to the back from the front-headlock position, keep control of your opponent’s tricep until you’re past the arm so they can’t block your hip.
COLLEGIATE
Keep pressure on your opponent’s head in the front-headlock position. If their head slips out the side they’ll be able to shoot a double-leg from their knees.
OLYMPIAN
Go for the finish with a 10-finger guillotine. Control your opponent’s chin with both hands, pull them into your chest and drive your hips down to finish the choke.
