Four-time World Jiu-Jitsu Championships gold medal winner Vinny Magalhaes shares his best submission moves - here how to execute a perfect Armbar defense counter to armbar.
SKILL: ARMBAR DEFENSE COUNTER to ARMBAR
1. Vinny (white gi) has Scott in his guard, and applies a standard armbar on Scott’s left arm, hooking Scott’s left arm with his left hand.
2. To defend, Scott stacks Vinny, raising up and pressuring down on Vinny’s legs and hips, making it difficult for Vinny to extend his body and apply the submission.
3. Vinny looks to counter Scott’s defense by first switching control of Scott’s locked left arm to his right arm.
4. Having hooked Scott’s left arm with his right, Vinny’s left is now free to go under and around Scott’s hips. Which he uses to help twist his head and core clockwise underneath Scott into a belly-down armbar position.
5. Vinny can finish from here, but if Scott defends by grabbing his gi pants with his armbarred hand, Vinny can grab and lift Scott’s left shin with his right hand and bump Scott’s upper body with his left leg.
6. This then allows Vinny to flip Scott onto his back, where he has the opportunity to finish with a regular armbar.
